Job description

At Epiq, your work contributes to complex, global legal outcomes. You’ll join a values‑driven community where integrity guides decisions, relentless service sets the bar, and we thrive on big challenges together. We invest in your growth with enterprise‑wide learning and mobility. We celebrate who you are, and we respect life beyond work with flexibility that’s recognized externally. Enabled by modern platforms and AI, you’ll do the most meaningful work of your career and see your impact at scale.

Job Description:

About the Role

Epiq is building AI‑native systems inside a real, revenue‑generating legal technology business —not demos, not innovation theater, and not slideware. In this role you will use AI as an architectural shift in how systems are designed and how value is delivered.

We’re hiring Applied AI Systems Engineers to join a small, high‑impact internal team that designs and ships AI‑driven systems from first principles. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, data systems, and applied AI, with a mandate to prototype aggressively, integrate with real enterprise systems, and deliver tangible business impact.

You will work on production‑bound systems that connect models, data, APIs, and workflows. This is a self-driven, collaborative role for builders who don't wait for perfectly manicured specs, but rather hunt for high-leverage problems and sketch solutions. This is an ideal role for builders who thrive with autonomy, enjoy ambiguous problems, and want to see their work used by real customers.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build AI‑native solutions that integrate frontier models, data pipelines, APIs, and enterprise content
  • Rapidly prototype applied AI solutions and evolve them into production‑ready systems
  • Build and connect retrieval systems, embedding pipelines, and structured/unstructured data flows
  • Integrate AI capabilities into real workflows with measurable business impact
  • Work across product, data, and engineering boundaries to identify and solve high‑leverage problems

Challenge Assumptions: Speak up when an assumption is wrong, explain why, and be equally comfortable saying, “I was wrong, let’s adjust.”

What We’re Looking For:

Core Requirements

  • 1–5+ years of experience in software engineering, applied AI, or data‑centric systems
  • Experience using Python or TypeScript in building real systems that connect:
    • APIs and services
    • Databases and/or unstructured content
    • Data pipelines or ETL workflows
  • Familiarity with modern AI/ML concepts, including LLMs, embeddings, and retrieval
  • Comfort operating without perfect specs — you can identify problems, propose solutions, and ship
  • Ability to distinguish demo‑quality work from production‑viable systems

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure)
  • Hands‑on work with retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) or embedding pipelines
  • Exposure to graph databases or complex data relationships
  • Familiarity with frontier LLMs (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.)
  • A portfolio of personal or professional AI projects you can discuss deeply

How Success Is Measured

You won’t be measured by tickets closed or story points shipped.

Success in this role is defined by:

  • Speed from idea to working system
  • Quality of system design under real constraints
  • Ability to turn experimentation into usable, valuable capabilities
  • Tangible business or revenue impact

How to Apply We are looking for builders, so standard cover letters aren't necessary. Instead, please submit:

  • A link to your GitHub.
  • A link to or description of a real AI project you have built.
  • A short explanation of what you would improve about that project if you were building it today.

Failure is expected — repeating the same failure without learning is not.

The Compensation range for this role is $120,000 CAD up to $175,000 CAD annually and may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. This will be based on your background and skills alignment with the role.

In considering this role you must be authorized to work within Canada with proof of right to work presented if required. Please also note AI may have been used in the screening process to assess suitability for the advertised role. This role is an Active Vacancy within Epiq.

  • Performance during screening and interview

  • Pay parity with the wider team in the considered location
