  • Proficiency with AWS services (ECS, EKS, Lambda, S3) and API gateway patterns; knowledge of Kong API Gateway (preferred); understanding of distributed systems, tracing, monitoring, and production troubleshooting.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience); excellent leadership and communication skills; ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Lead recruitment, hiring, and professional development for the Enterprise/API Core team; manage technical backlogs and drive value delivery.
  • Guide Agile practices and SDLC execution (design, coding, testing, analysis); promote continuous learning, self-organization, and Intent-Based Leadership.
  • Own delivery of API initiatives by improving unit and automation test coverage, enhancing API performance, and implementing cloud-first observability; collaborate with Architecture, Product Management, and stakeholders to define strategic goals.
  • Oversee project status reporting; remove organizational impediments; ensure adherence to objectives, timelines, and standards; ensure compliance with applicable laws and organizational policies.

Job Description:

NextGen is seeking a technical Engineering Manager to lead our Enterprise API Core team as part of our company-wide API-First transformation. This highly visible role reports directly to the Director, Software Development of Enterprise Architecture and Technology Strategy and will collaborate with Architecture, Product Management, and technical leadership to deliver a world-class API developer experience for internal consumers and third-party integrators.

You will own the software development process, including managing technical backlogs, improving unit and automation test coverage, enhancing API performance, and implementing cloud-first observability principles. Additionally, you will build and grow the API team through recruitment and professional development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead recruitment and hiring for R&D team members.
  • Foster professional development and implement training initiatives.
  • Remove organizational impediments to ensure smooth value delivery.
  • Provide guidance on Agile mindset, Scrum practices, and SDLC phases (design, coding, testing, analysis).
  • Promote continuous learning and self-organization within the team.
  • Coach and develop team members using Intent-Based Leadership principles.
  • Oversee project status reporting and ensure adherence to objectives, timelines, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define strategic software development goals.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and organizational standards.
  • Perform additional duties supporting the overall objectives of the position.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Experience:

  • 12+ years in Software Engineering.
  • Must have prior experience as a team lead or in a supervisory role.
  • Healthcare IT industry experience preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong expertise in .NET and .NET Core (critical requirement).
  • Knowledge of AWS services (ECS, EKS, Lambda, S3) and gateway patterns.
  • Experience with large-scale, high-throughput API development.
  • Familiarity with API authentication/authorization standards and best practices.
  • Understanding of distributed systems, tracing, monitoring, and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Experience with modern deployment strategies and trade-offs in production environments.
  • Knowledge of Kong API Gateway (preferred).
  • Familiarity with REST, GraphQL, CQRS, and event-driven development patterns.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted development practices (a plus).

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to thrive in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Skilled in balancing planning with flexibility to meet diverse client needs.
