The opportunity

We are looking for a Marine Appraiser to join our team to provide marine appraisal services in support of the Aviva Specialty claims department. This role will specialize in recreational watercraft including powerboats, sailboats and yachts under $1m in value.

This role is available as work from home, as the responsibilities include remote desktop review of appraisals across Canada, the US, and the Caribbean, as well as field work in the successful candidate’s region.

What you'll do

The role is focused on servicing Aviva Lifestyle watercraft claims while adhering to the protocols established and led by Aviva Specialty Claims. As part of this job you will:

  • Provide appraisal oversight of watercraft claims being responsible for the remote review and approval of repair estimates. This includes validation of labor rates, part prices, repair methods and cause of loss in accordance with industry standard procedures.

  • Ability to review technical documents including surveyor reports, engineering reports and insurance policies to provide technical advice and recommendations.

  • Attend in person field inspections within designated region to assist with quantification of losses and act as a representative of Aviva providing exemplary customer service.

  • Conduct market research in determining and supporting valuations of watercraft, their trailers and equipment.

  • Review and assist with wreck recovery, identifying resources and ensuring process and costs are customary to the industry.

  • Act as a technical resource to the department, assisting with inquiries and tasks as needed to support the adjusting function.

  • Recommend and direct the use of independent marine surveyors, ensuring alignment with internal procedures.

  • Act as liaison and representative of Aviva with external parties including marinas, repair facilities and experts as required.

  • Maintain specialty department standards including adherence to timelines for appraisal approval and turnaround.

  • Comply with reporting and audit requirements as required in the Specialty claims department.

What you'll bring

  • Minimum 5 years claims technical experience with marine appraisal

  • Experience with watercraft exceeding $150,000 in value

  • Strong knowledge of customary practices in the marine industry

  • Valid driver’s license

It is considered an asset if you:

  • Have experience with field appraisal and/or surveying of watercraft

  • Completed ABYC, SAMS or equivalent programs

  • Have completed or are working towards completion of the Insurance Institute Program (CIP / FCIP)

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $75,000 to $100,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
