Job Summary:
The Logistics Intern (Outbound) role at Ocean State Job Lot (“OSJL” and “Company”) is a paid, full-time, temporary position designed to help students develop a broad knowledge of the Company and build the OSJL brand. Specifically, this intern will help scale and professionalize cost improvement efforts by bringing fresh analytical energy to the Transportation Team. The primary goal is to help our team save money on shipping. The role will use data to find better ways to move products and turn old, manual paperwork into modern digital tools.
Key Responsibilities:
Project-Specific Duties (Logistics & Cost Optimization):
- Check data about shipping both domestic and international to spot unnecessary spending.
- Help figure out if it is cheaper to use OSJL's own trucks or to hire other shipping companies.
- Convert tasks currently done with paper or basic spreadsheets into modern, digital tools like smart dashboards using programs such as Domo or Excel.
- Use the Company's computer system (Oracle ERP) to confirm that the bills we receive from shippers are correct and match the agreed-upon prices.
- Find simple ways to cut costs, such as putting many small shipments together into one large one or discovering more efficient delivery routes.
General Internship Duties:
- Prepare and deliver a final presentation to OSJL executive leadership and ownership at the conclusion of the program, summarizing key projects, insights, and achievements.
- Participate in weekly educational programming and development workshops designed to enhance professional skills and industry knowledge.
- Attend in-person and virtual events to build relationships across the Company.
- Shadow associates to gain an understanding of department roles and assist with projects in furtherance of department objectives.
- Acquire an understanding of the business environment, conduct, compliance, and ethics of a retail organization.
Qualifications:
- Enrollment in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program is required, with strong academic credentials. Preferred fields include Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or Finance.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Excel) and Google platforms (Sheets), including VLOOKUPs and pivot tables.
- Familiarity with data tools such as SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or Google Data Studio is highly relevant to the project goal.
- Interest in transportation/logistics; prior coursework or experience in freight, procurement, or cost analysis is preferred.
- Detail-oriented and proactive mindset, with the ability to work comfortably with large datasets.
- Ability to work a full-time schedule. Must have reliable transportation to attend program educational experiences at different Company locations.
Work Environment:
- This role will be fully on-site 5 days per week.
- Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office environment, sitting at a desk or computer workstation for extended periods.
- Within Company locations, the intern may be assigned a Company computer. When working remotely, the intern is responsible for setting up a professional workspace and must be available during working hours.
