Job description

For over 20 years, Smartsheet has helped people and teams achieve–well, anything. From seamless work management to smart, scalable solutions, we’ve always worked with flow. We’re building tools that empower teams to automate the manual, uncover insights, and scale smarter. But more than that, we’re creating space– space to think big, take action, and unlock the kind of work that truly matters. Because when challenge meets purpose, and passion turns into progress, that’s magic at work, and it’s what we show up for everyday.

Smartsheet Views are the user-facing center of the Smartsheet experience. They are the highest-usage UX area in the product, and the primary way millions of users interact with the Grid Platform, the core of Smartsheet's Intelligent Work Management platform. As Director of Engineering for Views, you will lead the teams building Timeline View, Board View, and the Shared Experiences that power UX consistency across Smartsheet's growing portfolio of views. These teams sit at a critical intersection of front-end craft, platform architecture, and product strategy.

You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering, based in our Bellevue, WA office, or you may work remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.

You Will:

  • Own the engineering vision, charter, and goals for the Views pillar, partnering with your product counterpart to co-drive roadmap and quarterly priorities for Timeline View, Board View, and Shared Experiences.
  • Lead multiple engineering teams through a layer of Engineering Managers and Principal Engineers, holding them accountable for delivery, technical quality, and team health while coaching them to grow as leaders.
  • Drive the architecture of highly scalable, high-traffic, high-availability front-end experiences at the center of Smartsheet's intelligent work management platform.
  • Set and maintain a high quality bar across the pillar, including code quality, automated test coverage, performance, security, and operational excellence, and build the mechanisms to sustain it.
  • Define metrics and own engineering and business outcomes for the pillar, including availability metrics, production reliability, and customer satisfaction signals.
  • Initiate and guide cross-team technical efforts, resolving architectural conflicts, reducing duplication, and making bold decisions that position the Views platform for future needs.
  • Communicate proactively to a wide range of audiences, from your engineering teams to executive leadership and customers, translating technical complexity into business context and vice versa.
  • Drive AI adoption across the pillar, holding leaders accountable for AI productivity and championing AI-first design decisions and operational practices.
  • Lead strategic hiring planning for the pillar, model a high bar for talent, and build an inclusive culture that develops and retains great people.
  • Demonstrate a passion for continuous improvement; build learning organizations that keep pace with the state of the art and mentor engineering managers and principal engineers across the pillar.

You Have:

  • 11+ years of software engineering and system architecture experience across multiple languages, frameworks, and paradigms.
  • 5+ years in engineering leadership, including 3+ years managing organizations of 20+ people with direct experience leading managers.
  • A track record of building and scaling high-traffic, high-availability enterprise SaaS products at scale.
  • Deep familiarity with modern front-end development and state management; hands-on experience with React, Redux, Webpack, or comparable libraries is required.
  • 4+ years of microservice or SOA-based web application development and experience designing distributed systems.
  • Experience with AWS infrastructure tooling (Terraform, EC2, ALB, Route 53, etc.) and NoSQL/relational database architectures across globally replicated cloud environments.
  • A track record of building secure, performant applications and embedding security principles into team architecture and culture.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical programs with significant ambiguity and cross-team dependencies; you deliver results under tough circumstances.
  • Strong CS fundamentals: object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and familiarity with Agile/Scrum and DevOps/CI/CD practices.
  • Clear communication across audiences, from executive briefings to coaching conversations with engineering managers.
  • An ability to build trust across product, design, and platform by being the person peers call when problems get complicated.
  • Experience coaching through ambiguity rather than defaulting to top-down direction.
  • A BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis.
