Job Description:

Position Purpose: 

The Advisor, Volunteer Services exists to ensure The Salvation Army in Canada effectively attracts, supports, and retains volunteers who are essential to delivering its mission. The role oversees the full volunteer lifecycle—from role design and screening to engagement, recognition, and retention—ensuring volunteers are meaningfully and safely integrated into programs. By strengthening partnerships with internal stakeholders and implementing consistent volunteer management strategies, the Advisor helps enhance volunteer experiences and program outcomes across the territory. This role also drives continuous improvement of volunteer processes, contributing to organizational sustainability and impact. 

This is a temporary, fixed-term (2 year) contract position that will end in March, 2028.

Key Accountabilities:  

  • Evaluate volunteer program needs and implement strategies that improve volunteer engagement, retention, recognition, and overall experience across the territory. 

  • Assess volunteer roles for risk, safety, and screening requirements to support effective placement and streamlined onboarding. 

  • Design clear, current volunteer role descriptions that align skills, qualifications, and organizational needs with service delivery goals. 

  • Lead and coach volunteer engagement teams to foster a strong culture of volunteerism and consistent implementation of volunteer management strategies. 

  • Oversee the full volunteer lifecycle to ensure high-quality onboarding, training, support, recognition, and positive transitions out of service. 

  • Collaborate with marketing, communications, and stakeholders to strengthen volunteer recruitment, recognition initiatives, and community relationships. 

  • Administer volunteer recruitment, inquiries, reporting, and documentation to ensure responsive service, accurate data, and policy-aligned practices. 

  • Champion The Salvation Army’s mission, values, and professional standards by enhancing volunteer experiences, supporting inclusion, and pursuing ongoing professional development. 

Education and Experience Qualifications: 

  • Completion of post-secondary education. 

  • Completion of Volunteer Management Certificate. Additional specializations in volunteer recruitment, project management or a related field is an asset. 

  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in volunteer management and marketing including sourcing, analytics and onboarding of volunteers. Experience with volunteers in the non-governmental agency field is an asset. 

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively through oral, written, and interpersonal interactions. 

  • Builds trusted, collaborative relationships with senior leaders and stakeholders through professionalism and sound judgment. 

  • Applies conflict and crisis management skills to navigate complex or high-pressure situations with confidence and composure. 

  • Utilizes digital recruitment platforms and social media tools to support outreach and engagement efforts. 

  • Brings strong organizational and administrative capabilities, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and presentation tools. 

  • Works effectively in fast-paced environments while contributing as both a team member and a leader. 

  • Champions equitable, inclusive recruitment practices and clearly communicates processes to stakeholders. 

  • Demonstrates alignment with The Salvation Army’s mission, values, and culture, with assets including Salesforce knowledge and program awareness. 

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $55,693.49 to $69,616.86 with a maximum of $83,540.23.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
