Position Summary

The GIS Coordinator supports conservation and land stewardship across Alberta by managing spatial data systems, maintaining data collection workflows, and delivering spatial analysis and mapping products that inform conservation planning and decision-making.

The GIS Coordinator will report to the Manager of Conservation Planning and Spatial Analysis and works closely with conservation, stewardship, securement, and development teams within a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Externally, the GIS Coordinator will work with partner organizations and others as opportunities arise.

This role leads the design, implementation, and administration of field data collection workflows using ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, and ArcGIS Online, ensuring consistent standards, efficient processes, and reliable integration of spatial data across programs. The GIS Coordinator will lead the development and delivery of mapping products and spatial documentation for monitoring, land securement processes, and stewardship documentations, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment with organizational standards. The GIS Coordinator will also conduct, and support applied spatial analyses to inform conservation prioritization, landscape planning, and strategic decision-making, using conservation planning tools and geospatial modelling approaches.

The successful candidate will strengthen spatial data governance, support applied spatial analysis and conservation prioritization initiatives, enhance user adoption of geospatial tools, and translate technical solutions into practical, user-friendly workflows that advance conservation outcomes. The position is based in Alberta, with candidates located in the Calgary or Edmonton region preferred.

Position Requirements

Education

• Degree or diploma in Geography, GIS, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience). 

Experience

• 2–4 years of professional experience working with GIS and spatial data management. 
• Experience managing geodatabases, spatial data standards, and data quality workflows. 
• Demonstrated experience producing maps, spatial analysis, and geospatial reporting products.
• Proven experience designing and managing mobile data collection solutions using ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, and/or Experience Builder.
• Experience supporting conservation, environmental planning, land management, or natural resource projects is strongly preferred.
• An understanding of Alberta’s landscapes, communities and conservation issues, with the ability to seek out and use datasets available for planning initiatives in Alberta and more broadly (integrating wildlife movement data, climate projections, and broader planning initiatives into the maps that NCC produces).

Technical Skills

• Advanced proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Esri web GIS ecosystem.
• Strong understanding of geodatabase design, data governance, and data quality standards.
• Experience developing and maintaining field data collection workflows and spatial data pipelines using Field Maps, Survey123, and ArcGIS Online.
• Proficiency in the use of GIS in the context of map development.
• Experience with remote sensing, spatial modelling, or conservation planning tools.
• Familiarity with Python scripting for GIS automation (ArcPy or similar) considered an asset.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Soft Skills & Competencies

• The ability to communicate with regional colleagues who require support, training, and leadership in GIS tools.
• The demonstrated ability to organize and integrate complex information from diverse disciplines in support of conservation planning, analysis, and data management.
• Proficiency in writing and presenting spatial information for development and conservation purposes (i.e. Story Maps, securement documents, stewardship documents, etc).
• Background in science, geography, conservation, ecology, or environmental studies is an asset.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Problem-solving mindset and ability to work independently.
