Job description

Our Why

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people’s lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

About the Role (your why)

Our Tech Cloud Operations team is the backbone of our Cloud Operations capability, ensuring our cloud platforms and services run seamlessly for our customers. We are looking for a Team Manager who is both a proven leader and a highly capable engineer — someone with Level 3 engineering expertise across Infrastructure as Code, DevOps, and cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS). This role blends people leadership with hands-on technical delivery, supporting a team of 12 direct reports, solving complex operational challenges, and driving continuous improvement. You’ll also be encouraged to explore emerging technologies, including agentic AI.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract
with the possibility of extension, offering the opportunity to make a significant impact on the operations side of our business.

Our office is based in Auckland, New Zealand. We like to bring people together in person when we can, but we are mindful of the benefits of working from home for work/life balance. We therefore leave it to you and the team you join to figure out what works best!

What you’ll do

At the moment, as Team Manager – Tech Cloud Operations, you will be focused on:

  • Mentoring and supporting a large team of engineers in the BAU/operations space
  • Being actively hands-on in Level 3 engineering tasks, troubleshooting, and problem-solving
  • Overseeing operational delivery, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and security of our cloud platforms in Azure and AWS
  • Orchestrating Infrastructure as Code and leveraging DevOps practices for operational efficiency
  • Managing relationships with key stakeholders in our customers and the broader Datacom team
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives and exploring new technologies, including potential applications of agentic AI
  • Balancing technical excellence with people leadership to create a high-performance, collaborative team culture

We are a pretty agile company, and are keen to respond to customers, technology, and internal stakeholders’ changing requirements — this can mean we evolve in our roles to meet those needs.

What you’ll bring

Required experience:

  • Level 3 engineering experience in Infrastructure as Code, DevOps, and cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS)
  • Familiarity with automation and orchestration tools
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills and ability to work in complex operational environments
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical delivery with effective people management

Nice to have:

  • Exposure to agentic AI and its operational applications
  • Experience working within large-scale enterprise environments
  • Understanding of ITIL or similar operational frameworks
