Roles & Responsibilities

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in nonprofit accounting or federal award management environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial reporting and federal compliance regulations for federal awards, including Uniform Guidance, 2 CFR 200, and OMB Circular.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, with expertise in financial reporting, general ledger reconciliation, and internal controls.

Requirements:

  • Manages all aspects of the general ledger, including analysis and reclassification journal entries, and monitors federal award expenditures to ensure funds are used in accordance with grant terms.

  • Records and reconciles revenue recognition for grants and contracts under ASU 2018-08 and ASC 606; prepares indirect cost allocations and journal entries; maintains monthly schedules for restricted and unrestricted funds; supports tax filings (e.g., IRS Form 990).

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. 
 
Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children.

Position Summary

KIND seeks a Accounting Manager who plays a crucial role in managing the daily accounting operations of all KIND entities. The incumbent  is responsible for preparing journal entries, reconciling financial statements and accounts, producing monthly accounting schedules with accurate data, maintaining fiscal records, and supporting monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes. The Accounting Manager works very closely with the Controller to guarantee compliance with GAAP, funder's requirements and the efficient execution of accounting processes to be audit ready. It is integral to the finance team and requires a proactive professional with a solid background in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal awards, general ledger reconciliation, internal controls and audits. The Accounting Manager reports to the Global Controller.

 

This is a remote position based from any location in the U.S.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP, federal regulations, and federal award requirements, such as the Uniform Guidance (UG).
  • Assists the Controller with the implementation and maintenance of internal controls and financial policies to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
  • Performs monthly bank reconciliation for the domestic and international KIND accounts.
  • Manages all aspects of general ledger including analysis and reclassification journal entries in the accounting system.
  • Monitors and tracks federal award expenditures and ensure that funds are used in accordance with grant terms and conditions.
  • Expenses pre-paid transactions monthly and prepare the monthly schedules of the prepaid account.
  • Performs balance sheet reconciliation, resolves any discrepancies, and documents the process by creating and maintaining monthly schedules of the balance sheet accounts.
  • Assists in preparation for the annual single audit, ensuring that internal controls related to federal funds are adequate and effective.
  • Collaborates in the external financial audit process by providing the requested documentation.
  • Assists with the different audits requested by the states, local government grants, and private funds.
  • Stays informed on regulatory changes and emerging trends in nonprofit accounting, federal award management, and financial reporting to implement best practices overall accounting operations.
  • Performs other accounting and financial tasks as needed to support the overall financial health of the organization.
  • Supports the preparation of required tax filings, such as IRS form 990.
  • Records and reconciles revenue recognition entries for grants and contracts in compliance with ASU 2018-08, ASC 606 and donor restrictions and conditions.
  • Ensures proper allocation and reconciliation of restricted and unrestricted funds by maintaining monthly schedules.
  • Prepares indirect cost allocation and journal entries in accordance with organizational policies, federal guidelines, and grant agreements.
  • Identifies and mitigates risks related to accounting processes.
  • Promotes a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the accounting team.
  • Assists with other ad hoc projects as requested by management.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a nonprofit accounting or federal award management environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial reporting and federal compliance regulations for federal awards, including Uniform Guidance, 2 CFR 200, OMB Circular.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and financial management best practices.
  • Expertise in financial reporting, general ledger reconciliation, and internal controls.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex accounting data.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Sage Intacct or similar) and Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate as appropriate.
  • Ability to multitask and work with a sense of urgency in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
