This position works out of our Columbus, OH location in the Nutrition Division. In Research & Development, our ambition is to provide innovative high-quality products, creating sustainable value, delivering superior user experience, and enhancing health outcomes at all stages of life. 

Primary Job Function

The Microbiology Department within Abbott Nutrition’s R&D (Global Analytical and Food Safety) is responsible for conducting microbiological analysis of R&D project samples.

The Associate Scientist candidate is responsible for applying high quality laboratory techniques in the analysis of samples submitted for routine release testing of ingredients, in-process samples, finished products, and environmental monitoring samples.  Additionally, support is provided to manufacturing sites for follow up studies, support of process system validation studies, and other requested special projects. 

The typical workload will include activities such as lab cleaning, preventive maintenance, media preparation, ordering supplies, pathogen screening tests, plate count tests, and genetic identifications.

This position will be accountable to the laboratory management and department management for outcomes related to assignments. The individual in this position is expected to organize time and means to accomplish the assigned tasks based on laboratory demands.   

What You’ll Work On

  • Implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.
  • Conducting routine and complex microbiological procedures according to written and or verbal instruction with little direct supervision.  Recognizes problems and errors and makes or seeks corrective actions.
  • Write technical reports.
  • Performing non-routine analysis when given direction.
  • Assisting in method validation and verification activities.
  • Reporting results according to documentation procedures and policies. 
  • Performing functions in compliance with relevant corporate and division procedures. 
  • Complying with laboratory safety practices.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
  • Assist in training new microbiology lab personnel.
  • Act as liaison between lab and external parties.
  • Serving as a member of teams and committees as needed.

Required Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Microbiology or a life science discipline is required. Preference for Microbiology/Biology graduates.
  • The ideal candidate will have two to five years’ relevant work experience after completing a bachelor’s degree. Consideration may be given to less years of experience post-degree if experience is gained through internship or assignments in a related field.

Preferred:

  • At this level an individual will demonstrate a basic understanding of Microbiology and other scientific principles corresponding with an undergraduate degree level, gained through academic training or practical experience.
  • This position routinely communicates with laboratory co-workers and customers. 
  • Interpersonal relations skills are important. 
  • Problem solving skills are desirable for investigating or trouble shooting method related findings or any laboratory errors. 
  •  Ability to manage workload efficiently and with accuracy is critical.
  • Clear communication while working with co-workers, a high degree of motivation, and attention to detail is expected.

The base pay for this position is

$46,700.00 – $93,300.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
