Roles & Responsibilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgy or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years experience in mechanical industry failure and/or functional analysis; bearing investigation experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and analytical skills; proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of bearing steel properties, heat treatment and microstructure, plus familiarity with ASTM and ISO metallurgical standards and quality management.

Requirements:

  • Perform advanced bearing failure investigations and analyses for Aerospace and Industrial customers, including field returns and engineering returns, and generate final reports independently.
  • Lead data collection and management; input data into the Aero FRC Returns Database to keep the system up-to-date; coordinate with cross-functional teams.
  • Lead technical discussions with Application Engineering, PDE, Quality Assurance, Metlab, and local/global experts; assist PDE Managers with training for new engineers or technicians.
  • Support/lead research and development activities; contribute to development of advanced materials for aerospace bearings; manage projects using Agile and PDP processes and collaborate with metallurgy/heat-treatment lab staff; contribute to emissions reduction initiatives.

Salary Range: $123,000.00 to $139,000.00

Summary:

We are looking for a Bearing Investigation Engineer, Aero FRC, for our Falconer, NY operation. This position reports to the Product Development Manager and will be responsible for advanced failure and functional investigations of bearings and related components.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide bearing investigation and failure analysis related projects to Aerospace and Industrial customers as well as to other parts of the SKF organization.
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement of the laboratory’s processes, the quality of work and the team spirit to be able to continuously improve customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct bearing investigation for field returns, engineering returns, and create the final reports independently.
  • Be in charge of data collection and management; input the relevant data into the Aero FRC Returns Database, in order to keep the system up-to-date.
  • Lead the technical discussion with Application engineering, PD&E, Quality Assurance, the Metlab and Local & Global experts.
  • Assist PD&E Managers with training for new engineers or technicians.
  • Maintain and grow core competencies in bearings analysis for SKF products.
  • Contribute to the development of advanced materials for Aerospace bearing applications.
  • Project management with Agile and PDP process
  • Work with plant metallurgy and heat treatment laboratory staff towards improvement in the analysis of steel and other hard materials, including heat treatment related issues.
  • Contribute to SKF Aerospace efforts in the areas of manufacturing process CO2 emission reductions
  • Perform inspection of bearing steel, particularly on bearing steel cleanliness/micro-inclusion evaluation.
  • Perform bearing material failure analysis including visual inspection, X-Ray diffraction, SEM/EDS, etc.
  • Write/review technical reports.
  • Review/ approve the metallurgy reports if needed.
  • Lead bearing steel or relevant projects (work packages) for research and innovation.
  • Lead new competence development (including material, equipment, standards and personnel training etc.)
  • Support/lead sponsored research with academic institutions towards advancement of bearing materials and their performance with a focus on life extension, resistance to contamination and improved performance at higher temperatures and loads.

 

 

Qualifications/ Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (Preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgy or equivalent.

Desired:

  • Knowledge and experience on bearing damage and failures. Having knowledge of Bearings failure modes and their causes is preferred.
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computational and analytical skills.
  • Good command of both written and spoken English.
  • Experience in mechanical Industry Failure and/or Functional analysis is required. (At least 5 years).
  • Experience in Bearing Investigation is preferred.
  • Experience in metallurgy or material research areas is preferred
  • Good knowledge of bearing steel properties, heat treatment and microstructure.
  • Good knowledge of various ASTM and ISO standards for metallurgical tests, particularly for bearing steel tests.
  • Good knowledge in quality management.t
  • Highly responsible and open-minded.
