Roles & Responsibilities

3+ years of MariaDB experience (replication, GTID, binlog, InnoDB tuning, Mariabackup, Percona Toolkit)
Experience with AWS RDS and knowledge of RDS limitations vs self-hosted environments (parameter groups, snapshots)
Ability to read EXPLAIN plans, identify inefficient indexes, and perform independent performance tuning
Experience with schema migrations using pt-online-schema-change or gh-ost and integration with CI/CD pipelines; understanding of locking implications

Requirements:

Own MariaDB replication topology and high availability: design GTID migrations across self-hosted and RDS, monitor replica lag, and define failover/switchover runbooks.
Performance and monitoring: audit slow query logs across engines, tune parameters for workload characteristics, and set up an observability stack (Prometheus+Grafana or PMM) for DB metrics.
Schema migrations and release process: enforce safe online migrations (online DDL, pt-online-schema-change/gh-ost), integrate migration steps into CI/CD, and maintain migration history and rollback procedures.
Backup, security, and documentation: implement and verify backup strategy (logical + physical) with tested restores and PITR; manage users/roles and access policies with least privilege, rotate credentials, and maintain runbooks and on-call documentation.

We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator to own and operate our multi-engine database infrastructure across self-hosted and AWS RDS environments. You will be the primary expert for database reliability, performance, migrations, and disaster recovery. This is a hands-on engineering role - not a management position.

Responsibilities:Replication & High Availability
-Own MariaDB replication topology;
-Design and execute GTID migration plan across self-hosted and RDS instances;
-Monitor and maintain replica lag across all replicas;
-Define and test failover and switchover runbooks.

Performance & Reliability
-Continuously audit slow query logs across all three engines;
-Tune engine parameters for workload characteristics;
-Set up and own PMM or equivalent observability stack for DB metrics.

Schema Migrations & Release Process
-Define and enforce safe schema migration procedures (online DDL, pt-online-schema-change);
-Integrate migration steps into CI/CD pipeline; enforce no-deploy-before-migration policy;
-Maintain migration history and rollback procedures for every schema change.

Backup & Disaster Recovery
-Implement and verify backup strategy: logical + physical, with tested restore procedures;
-Maintain point-in-time recovery capability for all critical databases.

Security & Compliance
-Manage database users, roles, and access policies (principle of least privilege);
-Audit and rotate credentials on schedule; integrate with secrets management;
-Ensure data-at-rest and in-transit encryption is in place and documented.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
-Write and maintain runbooks for every database: failover, restore, migration, scaling;
-Conduct internal knowledge transfer sessions with the DevOps team;
-Participate in on-call rotation for database-related incidents.

Requirements

MariaDB
-3+ years: replication, GTID, binlog, InnoDB tuning, Mariabackup, Percona Toolkit.
Replication migration
-Has done position → GTID migration in production.
AWS RDS
-Knows RDS limitations vs self-hosted; parameter groups, snapshots.
Performance tuning
-Can read EXPLAIN, identify bad indexes, fix slow queries independently.
Backup & DR
-Designed and tested restore procedures; knows xtrabackup / mariabackup.
Schema migrations
-Used pt-osc or gh-ost; understands locking implications.
Monitoring
-Set up Prometheus + Grafana or PMM for database metrics.
Linux / Shell
-Comfortable with bash, systemd, log analysis.
Docker
-Runs DB in containers for dev / staging; understands volume management.

Nice to Have:
ClickHouse
-MergeTree, partitions, materialized views, query profiling.
MongoDB
-Replica sets.
Terraform / IaC
-Managing RDS instances via Terraform.
Python or Go
-Automation scripts, custom monitoring exporters.
