  • Typically 3 years of experience in technical laboratory services and operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including project management, decision making, delegation, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution.

Requirements:

  • Oversees day-to-day department operations, provides work direction and guidance to staff, and monitors clinical laboratory testing, evaluation of results, and testing proficiency.
  • Monitors budget compliance, analyzes laboratory fiscal needs and departmental performance, and addresses variances; leads performance improvement initiatives to enhance staff, physician, and patient satisfaction.
  • Ensures quality, regulatory, accreditation, compliance and competency standards are met; maintains adherence to current policies and procedures, coordinates orientation/training/competency testing, and reviews laboratory results for quality and accuracy with corrective action as needed.
  • Recruits, coaches, and develops staff; sets clear expectations, provides feedback, and manages performance; participates in hiring, compensation changes, promotions, and disciplinary actions.

Schedule Details/Additional Information:

Full-time day shift hours starting at either 6:00 a.m. or 6:30 a.m. No weekends or holidays required. Must be on-site; cannot work from home.

Pay Range

$41.10 - $61.65

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the department including providing work direction, expertise, and guidance to the staff. Oversees the clinical laboratory testing, evaluation of results, and the proficiency of testing.   
  • Actively participates in projects to meet strategic initiatives including implementation and development of quantitative outcomes.    
  • Monitors budget compliance. Analyzes laboratory fiscal needs, and departmental performance and takes action to address variances.  
  • Collaborates and implements performance improvement processes to optimize teammate engagement, and physician and patient satisfaction.    
  • Ensures quality, regulatory, accreditation, compliance and competency standards are met. Ensures compliance with current policies, procedures, and standardization and/or consolidation decisions.  
  • Coordinates orientation, training, and competency testing of staff and/or students. Maintains competency, as needed, in test systems and processes in defined discipline for area of responsibility. Serves as a technical resource for staff.  
  • Complies with the quality plan by implementing and monitoring quality indicators. Reviews laboratory results for quality, accuracy and validity. Documents and implements corrective action as appropriate. 
  • Selects, coaches, and develops team. Sets clear expectations to inspire and motivate the team. Manages performance by recognizing achievement, providing feedback, and administering progressive discipline when necessary. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations. 
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that people actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations, and laws applicable to the organization's business. 

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) BOC), or  
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent accrediting agency. 
     

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology or equivalent   
     

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in technical laboratory services and operations. 
     

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • ​ Demonstrated leadership skills including project management, decision making, delegation, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution.    
  • Ability to grow leaders through coaching, guidance, and development planning.   
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory compliance, accrediting and licensing agency requirements.    
  • Current knowledge of medical and technical advancements to plan for future growth and development.    
  • Intermediate computer skills including knowledge and experience with laboratory information systems.   
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.   

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • ​​​​Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job. 
  • Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs. 
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, twist and bend the majority of the workday. 
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and/or infectious agents. 
  • Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids. 
  • Must wear appropriate safety protection, i.e. laboratory coats, gloves, gowns and/or eye protection.
