Roles & Responsibilities

  • CCS certification (required)
  • 1+ years of outpatient coding experience in an acute care facility (required)
  • 2+ years of outpatient or emergency department (ED) coding experience in a tertiary/quaternary care facility (preferred)
  • Knowledge of Medicare requirements, billing, and reimbursement methodology (preferred)

Requirements:

  • Review, analyze, and interpret emergency department clinical documentation to assign accurate codes, ensuring compliance and optimized reimbursement
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare providers to clarify documentation and apply appropriate coding conventions, modifiers, and reimbursement requirements
  • Resolve edits, reclassifications, and late charges; notify management of accounts that cannot be resolved in a timely manner; ensure medical necessity for clinical tests per local and national policies
  • Stay informed of changes in reimbursement systems and coding conventions; maintain productivity standards and coding accuracy; interact with HIM staff and other departments as needed

Job Description:

Reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation in the emergency room medical record. Applies appropriate code conventions and payment system requirements. Ensures accurate coding to optimize reimbursement and compliance. Collaborates with healthcare providers to clarify documentation and coding issues. Assigns correct coding modifiers to ensure appropriate reimbursement. Resolves edit accounts, re-classed accounts, and late charges. Notifies the manager of accounts that cannot be resolved in a timely manner. Ensures all clinical tests performed meet medical necessity according to local and national policies. Interacts with health information management employees and other departments as needed. Remains informed of changes in reimbursement systems and knowledgeable on coding conventions and current updates. Meets and maintains established productivity standards and coding accuracy. Other duties as assigned.

  • CCS certification & Emergency Department Coding experience is a MUST!

• Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and physician office staff [Required]
• Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Encoder software [Required]
• Self-motivated and ability to work independently [Required]
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills [Required]
• Expanded knowledge of basic coding functions, rules, and guidelines [Required]
• Knowledge of Medicare requirements, billing, and reimbursement methodology [Preferred]

Education:
• High School Grad or Equiv [Required]

Field of Study:
• successfully completed a medical coding certificate program

Work Experience:
• 1+ years of outpatient coding experience in an acute care facility [Required]
• 2+ year him program. [Required]
• 2+ years of outpatient or emergency department (ed) coding experience in a tertiary/quaternary care facility [Preferred]

• Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) [Preferred] AND
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) [Preferred] AND
• Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) [Preferred]
