The Role

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Java Developer (Product Development) to join our backend engineering team. You will lead design and delivery of scalable, secure services that underpin payments, wallet operations and external integrations. This role suits someone who combines strong technical leadership with hands-on engineering, values pragmatic architecture and enjoys collaborating with product, security and operations teams in a regulated fintech environment.

Mission

• Deliver robust, maintainable Java services that enable product roadmaps and operational SLAs.

• Drive technical direction for backend systems, improving observability, resilience and security while enabling rapid delivery.

What you'll actually do

• Backend Development: Design, implement and maintain microservices and APIs in Java (Spring Boot or similar), applying clean architecture and SOLID principles.

• Integration & APIs: Architect and implement resilient REST/gRPC APIs, integrate with third-party payment and crypto providers, and define robust error handling and retry strategies.

• Testing & Quality: Drive a culture of testing by writing and reviewing unit, integration and contract tests; collaborate with QA to ensure acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements are met.

• Performance & Reliability: Profile and optimise services for latency and throughput, introduce caching and queuing where appropriate, and lead capacity planning efforts.

• Observability & Ops: Ensure services are instrumented with logging, metrics and distributed tracing; define meaningful alerts and runbooks to reduce MTTR.

• Security & Compliance: Embed secure coding practices in the team, participate in threat modelling and ensure services meet regulatory and internal security requirements.

• Continuous Improvement: Propose and implement pragmatic improvements to architecture, CI/CD pipelines and developer experience to speed delivery and reduce operational risk.

What you bring

• Experience: 5+ years building backend services in Java, with significant experience in production systems and leading technical delivery.

• Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of Java 8+ features, multithreading, JVM tuning and design patterns. Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems and data consistency models.

• APIs & Integrations: Proven experience designing and consuming RESTful and gRPC APIs, working with message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar), and managing external provider integrations.

• Testing & Automation: Demonstrable experience with unit, integration and contract testing; strong familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments.

• Cloud & Infrastructure: Experience deploying services to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure) and using containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes). Infrastructure-as-code experience is a plus.

• Communication: Excellent written and verbal English. Able to explain technical trade-offs to product, security and business stakeholders and influence decisions.

• Mindset: Pragmatic, collaborative and quality-focused. You take ownership of features end-to-end and balance delivery speed with long-term maintainability.
