Director, Data Engineering

We are looking for a Director of Data Engineering, Reporting, and Analytics to join DSPolitical’s highly collaborative Engineering team. This role is the leader of DSPolitical’s evolving data, reporting, analytics, and related technical practices.  The ideal candidate is comfortable with ambiguity, proactively seeking out information from business stakeholders and leadership, and helping craft product vision. 

From day to day, the Director of Data Engineering will be responsible for planning, management, and technical architecture (including design and high-level implementation) of our core performance reporting platform and related systems. They will lead product development in identity resolution and measurement, including developing warehousing solutions for PII and advertising log data.  They will also provide guidance and help craft processes and automation for recurring data operations needs.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

• Designs and implements system architectures for a growing reporting platform and other data services.
• Builds and maintains our identity and attribution infrastructure, and collaborates with Deploy engineers on related web services.
• Designs and implements identity resolution solutions to power client-facing products
• Collaborates with VP of Engineering and other technical leadership on roadmapping, product planning and execution and process development.
• Collaborates with other technical leaders to create appropriate project management processes.
• Oversees the maintenance our reporting pipelines and other automations
• Builds internal and external dashboards and analytics views
• Provides guidance on how to effectively use our data for both analytics and operations, working with other departments to understand their needs and design solutions.
• Provides leadership and direct management of data engineers and senior data engineers. This position may supervise up to three direct reports. 

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

• 10+ years of professional experience in data engineering, including 5+ years in leadership roles, preferred.
• Strong commitment to collaboration and mentorship
• Expertise in SQL 
• Expertise in database design and performance issues.
• Experience in a scripting language like Python or Node.
• Strong understanding of the nuances of running production services, including observability, alerting, and change management.
• Strong commitment to understanding business needs and translating those into technical systems
• Strong experience working in a highly collaborative environment. 
• Ability to effectively organize technical work in collaboration with other stakeholders.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering large-scale projects.
• Demonstrated success in building and mentoring high-performing teams.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Preferred:
  • Experience working in Snowflake and AWS
  • Experience with data visualization platforms such as Tableau

Office Hours

This position is based in Washington, DC however, we are open to remote work in other states. We will be working on a hybrid basis with many team members working entirely from home. Work hours are consistently 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, with the expectation that evening and weekend work will be required as necessary.
