Nature & Scope:

We are currently seeking to hire Term Wildlife Monitors for the 2026 Spring/Summer project season to support crews working in outdoor remote environments by ensuring the safety of personnel and minimizing wildlife risks.

Situated across the Arctic in remote North Warning System (NWS) sites in Northern Canada this Fly-In Fly Out (FIFO) term position will start in the Spring- approximately June 1 through September 30 – and travel to various Long Range and Short Range radar sites. 

Pre-deployment training will be provided prior to starting this role. The training is expected to be Confined Spaces Training, Working at Heights, with possibility of others to be added.

Located at our remote northern radar sites throughout the Arctic, this position will be responsible to assess wildlife risks, implement safety measures to prevent dangerous encounters, and help protect the NWS teams working outside in Canada’s unique Arctic environment. This role is ideal for individuals with experience in wilderness safety, wildlife deterrent handling, and Arctic operations.

This position is covered under the provision of the collective agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local 2228.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify, monitor and assess wildlife presence and safety risks during outdoor operations
• Deter wildlife interactions using approved non-lethal deterrents (bear bangers, air horns, rubber bullets) to prevent dangerous interactions
• Ensure compliance and strict adherence to Nasittuq’s safety and environmental protection protocols
• Communicate effectively with diverse team members about wildlife-related observations and safety measures
• Handle wildlife encounters and coordinate with wildlife officials when required
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years in a similar role (e.g. hunter, guide, camp safety officer)
• Valid Possession Acquisition License (PAL)
• Grade 12 or a combination of education, training and experience 
• Basic Wildlife Monitor or Wildlife Safety Technician Certification
• Wilderness First Aid CPR + AED Certification (or ability to obtain)
• Knowledgeable of Northern Regions of Canada and wildlife behaviours (polar bears, wolves, wolverines) and wildlife hazard protocols
• Demonstrated breadth of experience across multiple monitoring seasons, environments and projects
• Competent with use of deterrents and other non-lethal methods such as bear bangers, air horns, rubber bullets
• Ability to obtain and maintain Reliability Security Clearance
• Physically fit for Arctic terrain and conditions
• Comfortable working on a vessel (Sealift) for extended periods of time; flying frequently in helicopters and small, fixed wing aircraft
• Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including Fall Arrest Harness 
• Strict adherence to all safety policies, participation in required training, adherence to cold-weather/remote-site procedures and prompt reporting of hazards or incidents is a condition of employment
