Intermediate/Senior Building Science Engineer

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • P.Eng. status with the appropriate provincial association
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience minimum
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license

Requirements:

  • Act as project manager or technical lead on projects, coordinating with the Project Manager/Engineering Manager to meet production deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively with the Project Manager to collect and coordinate information; maintain relationships with teammates; may act as client contact.
  • Provide guidance to junior teammates, review reports, ensure technical standards are met, contribute to quality control, and prepare concise reports with minimal editing.
  • Perform design and inspection work across building envelope disciplines (curtain wall, energy efficiency, insulation, waterproofing, roofing, etc.); participate in design reviews and site inspections; stamp own designs and mentor engineers in training; identify risks at the proposal stage and assist with cost proposals.

Reports to:  Team Lead or Engineering Manager

 

Based at:  Regional Office (Calgary)

 

Position Purpose:  Working closely with the Project Manager, acting as PM or technical lead on various projects and meeting production requirements of the projects. Provides exceptional customer service and coordination assistance with internal and external project partners (consultants, contractors, etc.).

 

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with the Team lead/ Project Manager/ Engineering Manager in providing our clients with finished projects in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with the Project Manager; this includes collecting and coordinating useful information.
  • Maintain a working relationship with other teammates.
  • May act as client contact.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to junior teammates, this includes reviewing reports and ensuring technical standards are met.
  • Contribute to maintaining and improving quality control.
  • Write reports that do not require significant editing.
  • Capability in inspection and design standards of a variety of the following:
    1. curtain wall systems
    2. energy efficiency and sustainable designs
    3. insulation
    4. material interactions and compatibilities
    5. materials engineering
    6. parkades
    7. waterproofing
    8. roofing
    9. stucco
    10. transfer of heat, air and moisture through a building envelope
    11. windows
  • Participate in design reviews, field reports, investigations, reserve funds/FE, and site inspections.
  • Assist in the updating of corporate standards, devise new innovative approaches, apply existing criteria in new manners, and draw conclusions for comparative situations as appropriate.
  • Under supervision, prepare engineering cost proposals.
  • Identify risks associated with a project at the proposal stage; satisfy client and our requirements with regard to risk management.
  • Stamp own project design and reports and that of engineers in training for whom you are providing peer review as appropriate.

  • Teammates are required to adhere to the company policies and guidelines as well as the company and client safety policies and practices in effect at any given time.
  • Have the ability to apply for a Federal security clearance in order to work on institutional projects as required.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering 
  • P.Eng. status with appropriate provincial association
  • 4 – 6 years of experience minimum
  • Must have valid class 5 drivers license

  • Effective organizational and time management skills in handling multiple projects, performing a variety of tasks, and meeting required deadlines.
  • Able to operate independently and oversee work plans and procedures on projects.
  • Ability to represent the company to the WE teammates, clients and community by ensuring the best image is presented.
  • Ability to coordinate with all service lines, extract and relay relevant information for complex problems.
  • Application knowledge of WE systems and programs (including MS Office 365, SharePoint, discipline specific drafting/design software, etc.)
  • Understand building codes, model national energy code, ASTM standards, CGSB standards, CSA standards.
  • Understanding of: 
    1. construction inspections

    5. material interactions and compatibilities

  • Ability to identify risks – to satisfy client and WE requirements.
