Job description

Job Title: Controller

Location: Remote

Reports to: CEO

Position Summary

Quantum Leap Healthcare Collaborative (QLHC) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization established in 2005 as a collaboration between medical researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.  Our mission is to integrate high-impact research with clinical processes and systems technology to improve data management, expand access to clinical trial matching and sponsorship, and benefit patients, providers, and researchers. We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting functions. This role is ideal for a CPA who has built a strong foundation in public accounting and transitioned into an operational environment. You will be responsible for the integrity of our financial statements, ensuring GAAP compliance, and managing the complexities of revenue recognition within the clinical trial landscape. We need a "player-coach"—someone who can oversee the big picture but isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves to reconcile a difficult account or improve a process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting: Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Clinical Trial Oversight: Manage the financial lifecycle of clinical trials, including tracking investigator payments, accruals, and clinical supply costs.
  • Revenue Recognition: Oversee complex revenue recognition models, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant standards (e.g., ASC 606).
  • Internal Controls & Systems: Maintain and optimize the accounting system; identify opportunities for automation and process improvement to scale with company growth.
  • Audit & Tax: Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and tax preparers.
  • Operational Deep-Dives: Perform "in the weeds" reconciliations and data analysis to ensure the accuracy of the general ledger.

Qualifications

  • Certification: CPA required (Active or Inactive).
  • Public Accounting: Minimum of 5 years of experience in public accounting.
  • Operational Experience: At least 3 years of experience in an operating company or a not-for-profit environment.
  • Technical Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of GAAP and Revenue Recognition principles.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the financial mechanics of clinical trials (e.g., CRO management, patient enrollment milestones, and site costs).
  • Systems: Proficiency in mid-to-enterprise level accounting software (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or Microsoft Dynamics).
  • Mindset: A "roll up the sleeves" mentality with the ability to pivot from executive-level reporting to granular transactional work.
