Requirements:

  • Lead and mentor three MEP trade supervisors; act as Chief Engineer for the Central Heating Plant; recruit, train, and manage plant personnel in compliance with safety and regulatory standards
  • Develop and manage MEP and utility budgets; forecast energy use; identify and implement long-term efficiency strategies to reduce costs and carbon emissions; ensure compliance with energy codes and building performance standards; implement planned maintenance programs
  • Develop and implement Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), emphasizing low/no-cost improvements; optimize building performance through retro-commissioning and continuous system monitoring
  • Support capital energy and plant upgrade projects from design through commissioning; maintain and optimize the Building Automation System (BAS)

Job Description:

Facilities Management supports campus operations, planning, and sustainability across 60+ buildings (2M+ sq. ft.) and 300+ acres, with a staff of ~140 FTEs. The college is committed to carbon neutrality by 2037, anchored by a transition from a fossil-fuel steam system to a geo-exchange district energy system, paired with aggressive energy efficiency initiatives.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Facilities, the Supervising Facilities Engineer is the senior technical leader responsible for safe, efficient campus operations; optimization of the Central Heating and Chiller Plants; and future oversight of the geo-exchange system. This role drives energy performance, cost reduction, and sustainability outcomes while leading Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) supervisors and teams.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead and mentor three MEP trade supervisors; promote technical excellence and energy-conscious operations

  • Serve as Chief Engineer for the Central Heating Plant

  • Recruit, train, and manage plant personnel in compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards

Energy & Financial Management

  • Develop and manage MEP and utility budgets; forecast and track energy use

  • Identify and implement long-term efficiency strategies to reduce costs and carbon emissions

  • Ensure compliance with energy codes and building performance standards

  • Implement planned maintenance programs to maximize equipment efficiency and lifespan

  • Coordinate third-party energy audits and assessments

Technical & Project Management

  • Develop and implement Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), emphasizing low/no-cost improvements

  • Optimize building performance through retro-commissioning and continuous system monitoring

  • Support capital energy and plant upgrade projects from design through commissioning

  • Maintain and optimize the Building Automation System (BAS)

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Energy Engineering (or related field)

  • Experience: 7–10 years managing complex facilities and central utility plants; higher education experience preferred

  • Technical Expertise: HVAC, steam/hydronic systems, electrical distribution, and BAS

  • Licensure: Massachusetts Second Class Steam Engineer License and/or Professional Engineer (PE)
