Roles & Responsibilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; or 3+ years of related experience; equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) path preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; AutoCAD/Revit experience desired.
  • Ability to read/interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and communicate effectively with team members; strong organizational skills.

Requirements:

  • Builds and maintains relationships with Owner, Architects, Engineers, Project Team, and Subcontractors; communicates progress with a detailed development plan.
  • Prepares calculations to size infrastructure, equipment, and distribution; develops Scopes of Work, Specifications, and Preliminary Implementation Schedule; verifies applicable code requirements.
  • Manages subcontractor bidding process: facilitates pre-bid meetings, addresses RFIs, reviews bids for completeness, finalizes costs and project risk, and assembles the Final Project Estimate.
  • Assembles design development packages for third-party engineers and assists with final contract preparation, including scope and energy-saving attachments; performs energy calculations and supports the Project Manager during Construction.

Summary of Position Functions


The Project Engineer applies knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices in the design and specifications of mechanical systems including HVAC, water, plumbing, and other general mechanical systems for building projects. The Project Engineer has responsibility for using engineering techniques, theory, principles, and practices in a specialized engineering field.

Essential Position Functions

  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with Owner, Architects, Engineers, Project Team, and Subcontractors.
  • Communicates regularly with all team members regarding project development progress, open and closed tasks, and issues by creating a detailed development plan.
  • Prepares calculations to establish appropriate sizing for infrastructure, equipment, and distribution.
  • Research, verify, review, and become familiar with local, state, and national code requirements.
  • Develop detailed Scopes of Work, Specifications, and Preliminary Implementation Schedule.
  • Facilitate subcontractor pre-bid meeting and facility walk-thru and address any Requests for Information on General Construction items.
  • Receive subcontractor bids and review for completeness.
  • Finalize costs and access project risk with the Project Team. Build the Final Project Estimate.
  • Assemble schematic/design development package for transfer to third-party Engineers for design assistance, contract documents, or code review.
  • Assist with the Final Contract preparation by creating contract documents including scope and energy saving attachments.
  • Perform energy calculations comparing new and existing equipment/systems.
  • Support the Project Manager as required during Construction.
  • Other duties, such as development of associated building improvement measures, as assigned.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering or related field; or three+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT)/Professional Engineering (PE) path preferred.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • AutoCAD/Revit experience desired.
  • Read/interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Experience with design of education/or government projects highly desired.
  • Energy Engineering experience a plus.
  • Mechanical internship(s) a plus.
  • Experience with geothermal systems a plus.
  • Ideal candidate would have at least five years of experience and be willing to learn/train on required software (independent learning will be required).
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and extra hours if needed.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Travel Requirement

  • <40% travel may be required.
