Job description

About the role:

At Jan De Nul, we are proud of our fleet. As engineer vessel maintenance, you will make sure our high-tech vessels are operational as much as possible. You travel to our projects worldwide and take on the complete technical management of one of our vessels. Also if you’ve just graduated.

Jan De Nul is a pioneer in building at sea. We install renewable energy infrastructure, make marine transport possible, protect our coastlines and build the most advanced harbours. To keep our vessels operational as much as possible, we need technically minded engineers like you.

What you’ll do:

A job with opportunities and responsibilities

At Jan De Nul, we give talented people like you opportunities and responsibilities. You do not focus on one element across vessels, but will supervise the operational readiness of a complete vessel. You don’t sit in an office, but travel to one of our projects worldwide. You have the technical and people skills to assist an electrician or a technician on board, and you have the brains to organise large-scale maintenance activities.

You start with four weeks training: experts who came before you will teach you the job. Then, you will travel to the project where we need you most, with “Technical Superintendent Vessel Maintenance”, as your job title. This could be anywhere in the world. Your tasks will be:

  • Coordinate maintenance and repair activities.
  • Lead technical staff on and around the vessel.
  • Organise cooperation with shipyards and local contractors.
  • Take care of the logistic management of stocks of spares.
  • Check reports, repair lists and purchase orders.
  • Monitor safety, quality and minimal environmental impact.
  • Bridge communication between vessel and head office.

Of course, you will not be doing this on your own. You can rely on the help of (experienced) colleagues around you. You will learn on the job. The Fleet Manager supports you every step of the way and you will collaborate with most of our departments.

Two months on, one month off

Depending on the phase of your project and your development, you will work at the office in Aalst or on one of our projects worldwide. In Aalst, you work a forty-hour week with occasional work from home. As an expat on one of our projects worldwide, you work two months with 12-hour workdays, six days a week, followed by one month off.

What you need

  • A master’s degree in industrial sciences or a master’s in engineering sciences
  • The indispensable mindset of a solution seeker, a problem solver
  • Passion for everything technical
  • A feeling for people management
  • Planning and organisation talent
  • Teamwork skills
  • Thirst for adventure, coupled with an independent spirit
