The Hollow Man in the Basement is a short horror animation exploring themes of childhood fear, cosmic dread, and surreal dream logic. Set within the confines of a suburban home twisted by impossible architecture and apocalyptic imagery, the project aims to deliver deeply unsettling visuals through minimal motion, evocative environments, and haunting design.
We are seeking a skilled animator with a deep understanding of atmospheric storytelling, limited animation, and psychological horror aesthetics to bring this vision to life.
Responsibilities
Animate in a limited animation style, emphasizing atmosphere, surreal transitions, and emotional tone over fluid character motion.
Design and animate both realistic domestic environments (e.g., basements, bathrooms) and surreal architecture (e.g., infinite spaces, blueprint overlays).
Develop and animate disturbing creature design, primarily “The Hollow Man,” with a focus on subtle horror movements (e.g., slow tilts, minimal motion).
Create surreal and apocalyptic sequences (space, storms, explosions, dream logic transitions) using an expressionistic style.
Collaborate closely with the director to interpret storyboards and script directions into strong visual sequences.
Use techniques such as repeating frames, held poses, and looped environments to balance creative ambition with production efficiency.
Incorporate analog horror aesthetics such as static, flicker, and lo-fi textures to enhance unease.
Animate in a way that leaves room for strong sound design, using visual stillness and negative space effectively.
Requirements
Experience with limited animation (minimal character motion, focus on atmosphere and surreal imagery).
Skilled in horror and surreal visuals, creating disturbing, uncanny, and emotionally powerful imagery.
Ability to maintain a consistent dreamlike, oppressive tone blending realistic domestic spaces with surreal or cosmic elements.
Ability to deliver consistently under tight deadlines
Ability to maintain an established style without major shifts
Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently
