Job description

The mission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.  In the faithful pursuit of this mission, the Archdiocese is seeking a full-time Campus Minister for the Chaplain of Howard University in the Office of Catholic Campus Ministry

The Campus Minister is responsible for working with the Catholic Chaplain of Howard University and our FOCUS missionary team, to assist with planning events and programs, including Masses, build relationships, perform office-related functions, and keep the Office of Catholic Campus Ministry informed. The ability to multi-task, focus on detail, and professionally communicate with various internal and external constituents is essential.

The Campus Minister reports to the Catholic Chaplain of Howard University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Practice an ongoing ministry of presence on campus for fall and spring events, including recruitment of students and inviting them to activities and events.
  • Facilitate opportunities for students to encounter Christ through the Sacraments, faith formation programs (i.e OCIA, Bible study, retreats, small groups, etc.) social events, weekly student gatherings, and other activities.
  • Build relationships with students and campus leaders through the campus ministry programs as well as the Dean of the Chapel at Howard University.
  • Meet regularly for visioning and programming with the Chaplain and student leaders.
  • Empower and mentor student leaders.
  • Engage with students and help them connect their faith life with life as a college student at an HBCU campus.
  • Be creative with evangelistic efforts specifically geared towards reaching college students.
  • Oversee communications and correspondence for the ministry.
  • Create flyers, marketing, and social media for ministry events and programs.
  • Network with other campus ministers and particularly at other HBCUs.
  • Work with the Chaplain to manage and maintain a development database and communications with donors, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and other supporters.
  • Work with the Chaplain to manage campus ministry budget and financial records.
  • Work with FOCUS team missionaries and assist with integrating them into campus ministry program
  • Perform secretarial and clerical work for the Chaplain and in support of HU Bison Catholic.
  • Use Microsoft Office to create and maintain spreadsheets and databases, and prepare correspondence under direction of supervisor.
  • Be present during operating hours of the Sr. Thea Bowman Center.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Practicing Catholic living out joyfully and in good standing the teachings of the Catholic Church with a passion for the Church’s mission of evangelization.
  • A minimum of one year of related office experience.
  • Able to commit to flexible, full-time hours - including weekends.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Social Media platforms, Canva, and website management (Squarespace).
  • Experience with college students (ministry or otherwise) recommended
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment but also will require working remotely. This position also operates in a “nonprofessional” office environment on the campus, so there must be flexibility and openness to the informal work environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods. Additionally, ministry events include physical activities such as shrine tours and hiking.
