Since 2019, with strong support from the European Commission, OpenNebula Systems has been driving cloud & edge computing innovation in Europe, investing heavily in research and open source development. We play a strategic role in major EU initiatives such as the €3B IPCEICIS and the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud.

We are currently looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join our Innovation Unit in Europe and contribute to the development of the nextgeneration management platform for the CloudEdge Computing Continuum.

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer with a strong background in cloud computing andor Artificial Intelligence, ideally holding a PhD, to drive our participation in EUfunded research and innovation projects. This handson role requires deep technical expertise, proven experience in collaborative R&D environments, and a solid understanding of Horizon Europe or similar EU programs.

The candidate will lead the design, implementation, and coordination of our technical contributions across multiple projects, while also engaging with European partners, consortia, and institutional stakeholders. A strong interest in project leadership and innovation strategy is essential, as this role bridges advanced engineering with strategic thinking in shaping the future of sovereign and intelligent cloud technologies in Europe.

Our current focus includes the development of federated cloudedge infrastructures, integration with 5G networks, and the enablement of AI Factories—sovereign platforms that support the secure and scalable deployment of AI workloads across distributed environments. The selected candidate will play a key role in shaping these efforts within the context of strategic EU initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Analyze functional, integration, and use case requirements to make sure that OpenNebula meets the demands of the projects.
• Define cloudedge architectures for endtoend integrated solutions that respond to the needs of specific use cases.
• Identify the APIs, interfaces, and data formats of relevant software components and cloud services, as well as creating the documentation and diagrams of the integrated cloudedge solution.
• Identify and evaluate new technologies and innovations in cloud & edge computing, helping to drive partner relationships for alignment with our technology roadmap and business value generation actions.
• Work closely with other companies in the cloudedge ecosystem as part of international projects and open source communities.Writing and maintaining technical documentation and project deliverables.
• Coordinate project communication and dissemination actions, participating in public events and producing public materials about our participation in R&D initiatives.
• Lead technical participation of the company in international R&D projects, from initiation to delivery, ensuring adherence to project scope, milestones, KPIs, timelines, and budget.
• Utilize management tools to track project progress, document project details, and generate insightful reports for analysis and decisionmaking.
• Support our PMO in reporting on costroadmapresource forecasting.
• Contribute to the preparation of new project proposals.

  Experience required

  Academic Background and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. A PhD is highly valued.

  • Professional Experience

    • At least 2 years of research experience in the areas of cloud computing, edge computing, 5G, or artificial intelligence.
    • Proven experience participating in research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission (e.g., FP7, H2020, or Horizon Europe) or by EU Member States.
    • Proven experience working effectively within a remote team in a fastpaced changing environment.

    • Technical Experience

      • Handson experience in managing or contributing to open source communities.
      • At least 2 years of handson experience in development in the areas of cloud computing, edge computing, 5G, or artificial intelligence.
      • Proven ability to work with modern cloud architectures, AIML systems, or edge computing platforms.

      • Language Skills
        

        • English fluency at a professional or nativeequivalent level, with excellent clarity and expression in both writing and speech.
