Job description

Leonardo.Ai is an Australian technology startup. Our AIpowered platform allows users to create productionquality visual assets with unprecedented quality, speed, and style. Since launching in late 2022, we’ve grown to over 30 million users worldwide, and we’re just getting started.

Join us as we embark on the next chapter: building new products, evolving our platform, and scaling our systems to support a global creative community.

The Role:

We’re looking for a Senior Database Administrator to help scale the beating heart of our product, our data systems. This role sits within the Platform Tribe, a team focused on the foundations of engineering, including cloud infrastructure, observability, tooling, and data.

But this isn’t a traditional, siloed DBA or behindthescenes platform role.

You’ll be embedded within product squads, working closely with engineers, tech leads, and TPMs to shape how features store, access, and scale data. Your days will involve handson PostgreSQL performance tasks, schema design, and broader architectural planning. Some days you’ll be troubleshooting slow queries; other days, you’ll be helping a squad develop new services or contributing to platformwide data patterns.

We work in small, focused squads grouped into larger tribes, aligned with key areas such as Generative AI, Enterprise, and Growth. As a Senior Database Administrator, you’ll embed into 1–2 squads at a time, becoming their goto person for anything datarelated.

What You’ll Do:

  • Database Stewardship: Own the performance, security, and availability of our PostgreSQL systems running in AWS (Aurora, RDS)

  • ProductEmbedded Data Architecture: Work closely with squads to shape data models, optimise queries, and support feature delivery

  • Query & Performance Optimisation: Diagnose and resolve slow queries and bottlenecks, and proactively improve performance at scale

  • Operational Resilience: Monitor, alert, back up, patch, and upgrade production databases as part of our oncall support rotation

  • Platform Contributions: Document and improve shared patterns, standards, and tooling across our engineering org

  • Data Engineering (Optional): Support data lakehouse and ELT pipelines if you’re curious about contributing in that space

  • Squad Partnership: Embed into product teams for a quarter or two at a time — building trust, unblocking roadmaps, and helping ship faster

    • What We’re Looking For:

      • Handson PostgreSQL experience in production environments, ideally within AWS (Aurora, RDS)

      • Proven ability to design and evolve schemas for fastchanging product environments

      • Strong understanding of query performance, indexing, and relational data modelling

      • Comfort working in crossfunctional squads with engineers, product managers, and TPMs

      • Clear thinking around data architecture, standards, and tradeoffs

      • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools (e.g. CloudWatch, Datadog) and a proactive mindset

      • Familiarity with infrastructureascode (Terraform), scripting, or Python is nice to have

      • Bonus: knowledge of data lakehouse patterns, ELTETL, or distributed data systems

        • Our Culture
          • Inclusive Culture: We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. At Leonardo AI, we welcome and value your unique perspectives and experiences, as they are essential to our success.

          • Impactful Work: Join us in shaping the future of AI. Youll work on innovative projects that have a meaningful impact, and your contributions will help drive advancements in AI creativity.
