Job description

A new paradigm of computing

Magic Leap is a pioneer in spatial computing, developing groundbreaking augmented reality technology that seamlessly blends digital content with the real world. As the creator of the next computing platform, our mixed reality devices unlock new possibilities for how people interact with and experience their surroundings.

Magic Leap could be your place if you want to be part of a united team where everyone is empowered and trusted to make an impact. At Magic Leap, you can explore innovative solutions and use your talents to solve real-world problems. Working alongside industry experts, you can grow your skills and amplify human potential at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds. We know that successful change and progress accelerate diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, everyone's voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, with our bold partners, make the impossible possible.

The opportunity

As a Staff Process Engineer, NPI within our Manufacturing team, you will be responsible for identifying critical requirements, understanding system sensitivities, developing execution strategies and mapping out key performance metrics necessary to achieve product goals. This role will report into the New Product Introduction (NPI) team and will act as a strategic partner across NPI engineering, research, product design, supply chain, product management, and manufacturing teams to tackle some of our biggest technical challenges.

This is a highly visible cross-functional role transitioning new products from concept phase to production, while focusing on critical product differentiation and fiscal responsibility. Candidates must be highly innovative and enjoy working in a dynamic and creative environment. They must be engaged in all critical aspects of new product development:  concept, Business case development, Industrial Design, Detailed Design, EVT, DVT, PVT, Ramp, and delivery.

Location: Ideally, we'd like to hire in Plantation, Florida. For the right candidate, our team is open to considering a hybrid hire. Regardless, you will be required to travel up to 30% of the time to our HQ and/or Boulder, CO locations.

What you’ll do

  • Develop Manufacturing Processes – Design and implement innovative manufacturing solutions for emerging optical display technologies, from concept through execution.
  • Lead Cross-Functional Collaboration – Partner with internal teams, including Product Design and Optical Engineering, to define technology roadmaps, development strategies, and key milestone criteria.
  • Drive Manufacturing Solutions – Develop, prototype, and optimize manufacturing processes, ensuring smooth transitions from new product introduction (NPI) to high-volume production.
  • Risk Management & Process Optimization – Conduct risk assessments, tradeoff analyses, and process experimentation to enhance manufacturing strategies and mitigate potential challenges.
  • Vendor Evaluation & Integration – Assess and collaborate with vendors, contract manufacturers, and supply chain partners to ensure process capability, quality standards, and production readiness.
  • Manufacturing Tool & Process Qualification – Design and qualify manufacturing tools, fixtures, and assembly aides to enhance production efficiency and scalability.
  • Product Readiness & Execution – Establish and refine product readiness strategies, execution processes, and transition requirements to achieve high-quality, high-yield manufacturing.
  • Data-Driven Design Feedback – Leverage production data, benchmarks, and performance analyses to inform design improvements and optimize cost, quality, and manufacturing efficiency.

The experience you bring

  • 8+ years of experience in NPI and manufacturing engineering, ideally within the consumer electronics or optical systems industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • Proven experience in developing and deploying automated factory equipment and processes for high-volume manufacturing, with a focus on optical or precision assembly.
  • Strong analytical skills with a meticulous approach to troubleshooting and optimizing manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams to drive projects from concept to completion.
  • Proficiency in DFX, design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA), process capability analysis (CPK/MSA), and statistical tools such as JMP or MATLAB.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design, including Creo (or equivalent) for part, process, and fixture development.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) principles to enhance efficiency and quality

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with optomechanical and systems engineering
  • Knowledge of fabrication and assembly processes, including testing and quality methods
  • Experience leading or contributing to cross-functional project teams

Additional Requirements

  • Flexibility for travel as needed (approximately 10-20%)
