Job description

Who we are

OSCAR Pro, a leading Electronic Medical Records (EMR) platform in Canada, is part of the WELL Health Technologies family. Initially developed by McMaster University’s Department of Family Medicine, OSCAR Pro was built on a foundation of collaboration to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. We have integrated innovations from various OSCAR service providers to offer a robust, secure, and versatile solution tailored to the diverse needs of clinics of all sizes.

Our platform empowers healthcare providers by streamlining administrative tasks, enhancing clinic efficiency, and enabling more time for patient care. With features like digital patient engagement, secure messaging, and seamless integration with other healthcare systems, OSCAR Pro reduces the administrative burden on clinics and improves the overall patient experience.

Our mission is to empower practitioners to deliver high-quality care while spending less time on administration. By providing cutting-edge digital tools, we ensure that healthcare professionals can focus on what truly matters—improving patient outcomes and experiences.

Who we need

We’re on the hunt for a Senior Full Stack Developer who is passionate about redefining software development through the power of agentic AI tools. In this role, you’ll work across the front-end, back-end, and everything in between—building and evolving healthcare applications that empower providers and improve patient outcomes.

You’ll be a key contributor to the ongoing advancement of our OSCAR Pro EMR platform, ensuring it remains performant, scalable, and aligned with healthcare standards. You'll also play a pivotal role in integrating agentic development platforms like Claude Code and Windsurf into our engineering workflow—writing prompts, evaluating AI-generated code, and helping establish internal best practices for AI-assisted development.

In addition to hands-on coding, you’ll lead architectural decisions, mentor teammates, and uphold high standards in code quality, security, and maintainability.

This is a remote opportunity, with hybrid options available in Vancouver and Toronto if desired.

Who you are

You are a seasoned full stack engineer who thrives on solving complex, meaningful problems. You bring deep experience in system architecture, API design, and cloud-native development—and you’re comfortable working with both modern stacks and legacy systems.

You’re fluent in agentic software development and have hands-on experience leveraging tools like Claude Code, Windsurf, Cursor, or CodeRabbit. You understand how to engineer effective prompts, validate AI output, and incorporate AI-generated code responsibly—knowing when to trust it and when to override it. You see AI tools as collaborative partners, not replacements.

You have:

  • A solid grasp of how to detect and correct AI hallucinations in generated code.
  • The ability to write great prompts and design workflows to maximize the effectiveness of AI agents.
  • A mentor mindset, with a drive to help others understand and adopt these technologies.

You’ve integrated agentic tools into your daily workflow and bring a clear-eyed understanding of their power and limitations. You’re not just a coder—you’re a problem solver, a mentor, and a team player who thrives in collaborative environments.

What’s in it for you

Impact. You will be pivotal in integrating the OSCAR Pro and Juno EMR systems into the new Polaris platform using FHIR. This high-visibility project will enhance interoperability and data exchange across healthcare systems, ultimately improving patient care and clinical efficiency. You will be at the forefront of modernizing healthcare technology, leveraging cutting-edge FHIR-based architecture to create a seamless, scalable, and secure healthcare data ecosystem. You will be part of a team passionate about developing critical healthcare technology to improve patient outcomes.

Technical challenges. You want to take on a results-driven role where you can see the impact of your work as you focus on optimizing our legacy stack and working towards implementing the latest tools. This is an exciting time to join us as we fully embrace the Agile methodology; you will play a key role in leveraging Six Sigma and Lean principles to drive continuous improvement and efficiency. Your work will contribute to the evolution of OSCAR Pro, closing feature gaps, integrating platforms, and optimizing performance. You will also have the chance to participate in Kaizen day, a monthly event where Developers can choose their focus, tackle the challenge, and showcase their results.

Career Growth and Stability. You will join the largest owner and operator of outpatient medical clinics in Canada with multiple EMRs and a remarkable milestone of $1 billion in revenue achieved in 2024, setting the stage for long-term growth and stability. As you contribute to the success of OSCAR Pro, you will have opportunities for career advancement, either within the OSCAR Pro team or across other areas of the business.

As our new Senior FullStack Developer, you will focus on:

  • Software development and integration. You will build and enhance OSCAR Pro, contributing to front-end, middle-tier, and back-end technologies. You will develop React-based web components to integrate OSCAR Pro and Juno EMRs into the Polaris platform using FHIR. You will optimize performance by analyzing slow queries, improving system efficiency, and refactoring code.
  • Code quality. You will conduct code reviews to ensure adherence to best practices in coding standards and security. You will improve unit testing and test automation to enhance software quality.
  • System optimization. You will contribute to the technical roadmap, participating in software design and architectural discussions, ensuring scalable, maintainable, secure solutions. You will reduce critical system issues (P1/P2) and improve platform stability.
  • Technical leadership. You will mentor junior developers, helping them expand their technical knowledge and refine their development practices and skills. You will drive best practices in DevOps, software development methodologies, and continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).

You bring:

  • The technical expertise. You have strong front-end development skills using React, Angular, and backend technologies, such as Java. You are highly proficient in SQL query optimization and have experience with Microsoft Azure. You have built CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, and GitOps. You have experience with Identity and Access Management (OAuth 2.0, OpenID, SAML, SSO, JWT). You can troubleshoot and reduce critical system issues (P1/P2 incidents). You have experience with healthcare technology integrations and tools, including FHIR, HL7, and healthcare data exchange.
  • The experience with AI-Powered Development. You’ve gone beyond experimentation—you’ve truly integrated agentic development into your daily workflow. You’ve used Claude Code, Windsurf, or similar AI agents to:
    • Automate boilerplate and repetitive coding tasks.
    • Generate scaffolding for new components and services.
    • Assist in test generation, refactoring, and static analysis.
    • Conduct AI-augmented code reviews and architecture validation.
  • You understand both the capabilities and the boundaries of these tools, and you’re constantly learning about emerging AI agents and techniques. You bring a clear-eyed, productive approach to integrating AI into real-world engineering problems.
  • The drive. You thrive in an autonomous role where you can research, recommend, and implement solutions. You are outcome-focused, working across teams to resolve complex technical problems and eliminate recurrences. You pride yourself on writing good code and supporting the efforts of junior team members.
  • The interpersonal skills. You have professional communication and relationship-building skills. You are highly collaborative and can effectively work across teams. You are open to feedback and willing to share knowledge. You know how to mentor and coach junior developers, fostering a high-performing team. You have a genuine appreciation for diverse experiences and approaches.

Why This Role is Different

We’re not just hiring someone who uses AI tools—we want someone who’s ready to lead the evolution of AI-assisted engineering within WELLSTAR. In this role, you’ll shape how agentic development is adopted across teams, establish best practices, and identify opportunities where AI can improve developer velocity, reduce cognitive load, and increase software quality.
