The Oregon Medical Board (OMB) is looking for an exceptional candidate to serve as a Systems Administrator. The person in this position must be a self-starter with excellent organizational, planning and project management skills, able to work independently, setting and achieving work goals, while keeping supervisor appropriately informed. The duties of the position require flexibility and the ability to properly prioritize work to meet competing deadlines. The successful candidate must have a strong background in customer support, information systems management, and security.

This announcement is for a full time, limited duration position, with some flexibility in work schedule and remote working. The customer support duties of this position require that most of the work be performed onsite. Our office is on the waterfront in beautiful downtown Portland, overlooking the Willamette River, and great view of Mt. Hood. Numerous public transit options are within quick and easy access.

This position is represented by Service Employees International Union and is subject to a collective bargaining agreement.

The mission of the Oregon Medical Board (OMB) is to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of Oregon citizens by regulating the practice of medicine in a manner that promotes access to quality care. The OMB licenses, regulates and investigates Oregon medical doctors, doctors of osteopathic medicine, podiatrists, physician associates and acupuncturists. Here’s what you will do:

As the Systems Administrator, you will architect and manage cutting-edge infrastructure that directly impacts public safety operations while pioneering technology adoption new to our agency and the state.

Infrastructure Innovation & Leadership:

  • Pioneer implementation of industry-new technologies, requiring complex coordination across multiple systems with broad agency impact

  • Evaluate organizational requirements to recommend advanced infrastructure investments that maintain our technological leadership

  • Redesign complex business processes to accommodate rapid technology evolution within the state and industry

Mission-Critical Operations & Performance:

  • Ensure continuous operations for time-sensitive, regulatory-compliant, mission-critical public safety systems

  • Analyze and optimize system performance across infrastructure and hybrid cloud environments

  • Manage sophisticated software deployments and devices for a remote workforce and cloud environments

  • Coordinate critical implementations and resolutions across multiple state agencies and external organizations

Advanced Security & Compliance:

  • Implement and maintain cutting-edge security controls exceeding evolving CIS NIST, FBI, and state oversight standards

  • Configure and enforce enterprise-grade secure remote-access solutions with conditional access aligned to regulatory controls

  • Audit hosted services ensuring compliance with advanced agency security protocols

  • Establish comprehensive security policies and internal controls protecting critical data and systems

Technical Excellence & Problem-Solving:

  • Troubleshoot complex technology failures, coordinate vendor escalations, and maintain business continuity for agency and external stakeholders

  • Create comprehensive documentation and procedures for advanced systems management

  • Facilitate resolution of competing technical and business requirements across internal units

  • Proactively identify innovative improvements to increase operational efficiency and productivity

  • Provide expert-level support and communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders (20-30% of role)

The successful candidate will leverage expertise in our advanced technology stack that exceeds industry standards:

Enterprise Infrastructure:

  • Hyper-V virtualization clusters

  • Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (SCCM)

  • Active Directory and Group Policy management

  • Windows Server (including Core) and Linux (Debian)

  • Veeam enterprise backup solutions

Cloud & Modern Development:

  • Azure Blob Storage integration

  • Docker containerization platform

  • Intune device management

Advanced Security & Monitoring:

  • Fortinet enterprise security suite (FortiGate, FortiAnalyzer, FortiClient EMS)

  • SecurityOnion threat detection and analysis

  • CIS Controls and NIST framework implementation

Collaboration & Service Management:

  • SharePoint enterprise collaboration

  • Jira project and issue tracking

What we are looking for:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


(a) Five (5) years of information systems experience in Systems Administration

OR

(b) An Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field,

OR

completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field;

AND

three (3) years of information systems experience in: Systems administration;

OR

(c) A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field

AND

one (1) year of information systems experience in: Systems administration.
