Job description

A Career at HARMAN

As a technology leader that is rapidly on the move, HARMAN is filled with people who are focused on making life better. Innovation, inclusivity and teamwork are a part of our DNA. When you add that to the challenges we take on and solve together, you’ll discover that at HARMAN you can grow, make a difference and be proud of the work you do every day.

About the Role

We're seeking a Data Product & ML Engineer to join the Harman Software Experiences Data Team, powering our flagship product – Roon – and future products. The role combines core data product engineering with ML system productionization, working closely with our Principal ML Engineer to turn machine learning models into scalable, production-ready services.

You'll be responsible for building data products, backend services, and metadata systems while also taking ML models and algorithms developed by our ML engineer and productionizing them into robust C#/.NET services that work at scale. This role offers an excellent opportunity to grow into machine learning while applying strong software engineering skills to solve real user problems. The Data Team is a collaborative, senior engineering team focused on delivering world-class music metadata and discovery services. We're looking for someone who brings a product mindset to data and loves using their skills to turn ideas into working systems.

The Data Team is a collaborative, senior engineering team focused on delivering world-class music metadata and discovery services. We're looking for someone who brings a product mindset to data engineering and is excited about bridging the gap between ML research and production systems.

What You Will Do

  • Build data product solutions - Write maintainable C#/.NET code for Dockerized Linux deployment to process, index, and enrich music metadata for search and recommendations using business logic, musical context, and user experience awareness.
  • Productionize ML models - Work closely with our Principal ML Engineer to take recommendation algorithms and models and deploy them as robust, scalable C#/.NET services that deliver personalized music recommendations to users.
  • Shape user-contextual experiences - Analyze listening patterns, usage contexts, and behavioral data to create "Stories" - personalized recommendations and insights that know the user better than they know themselves.
  • Architect backend services at scale - Build and maintain high-performance cloud services that deliver metadata and search capabilities across 60+ million albums, 300+ million tracks, and 20+ million artists to our global user base.
  • Enhance the team - Bring fresh ideas and technical approaches to the team, collaborate effectively with your colleagues, and champion best practices that raise the bar for code quality and system design.

What You Need to Be Successful

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience ideally with evidence of tenure and technical ownership, demonstrating deep expertise in data-driven applications and backend service development.
  • Proficiency in C#/.NET with ability to write efficient, clean, maintainable code for Linux containerized deployment, including debugging, performance optimization, and test-driven development practices.
  • Core technical skills - Strong SQL skills for complex data analysis and application-driven queries, networking fundamentals, basic shell scripting, understanding of client-server and service-to-service communication.
  • Development environment - Must have experience developing on Mac or Linux systems.
  • Business-focused data engineering - Experience with complex datasets, implementing business logic in code, and designing systems based on user requirements and domain knowledge.
  • Music-focused mindset - Genuine interest in music with understanding of current consumption patterns and discovery challenges, plus motivation to create better music experiences.
  • Interest in ML growth - Curiosity about machine learning and motivation to learn ML concepts.

Bonus Points if You Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related STEM field.
  • Experience with Python for understanding and working with machine learning models and data
  • analysis.
  • Experience with Docker, Apache Airflow, and major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP).
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and search optimization.
  • Any prior exposure to machine learning concepts, frameworks, or model deployment.
