Manager, Data Governance & Infrastructure

About the role:

At Aura we believe our data is our differentiator and we are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Manager, Data Governance & Infrastructure to help us execute that vision. Within our Data Engineering organization, you will lead a specialized team ensuring the integrity, security, and operational excellence of our data practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing infrastructure, security protocols, data governance policies, and the overall maintenance of our Databricks platform. This is a leadership position requiring a proven track record in managing technical teams and a deep understanding of data governance principles within a cloudbased data ecosystem.

Day to Day:

Team Leadership & Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers and specialists focused on Databricks infrastructure, security, and governance.

  • Foster a collaborative and highperforming team environment, promoting best practices and continuous learning.

    • Databricks Infrastructure & Operations:

      • Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of the Databricks platform architecture.

      • Ensure the stability, scalability, and performance of the Databricks environment, including cluster management, workspace configuration, and integration with other systems.

        • Cloud Infrastructure & Account Management:

          • Manage the underlying AWS cloud infrastructure supporting the Databricks environment, including networking, storage, and compute resources.

          • Oversee the development, maintenance, and deployment of infrastructureascode (Terraform) to provision and manage cloud resources.

          • Be responsible for the overall health, security, and cost optimization of the AWS account hosting the Databricks platform.

          • Implement and enforce best practices for cloud resource tagging, cost allocation, and security configurations within the AWS account.

            • Data Security & Access Control:

              • Develop, implement, and enforce robust security policies and procedures, aligning with organizational security standards.

              • Manage user access, roles, and permissions, ensuring adherence to the principle of least privilege.

              • Identify sensitive information and design and implement security measures to limit access and manage use of that data.

              • Work closely with information security teams to conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.​

                • Data Governance & Compliance:

                  • Establish and maintain comprehensive data governance frameworks, including data quality standards, metadata management, and data lineage.

                  • Define and implement data retention, archival, and disposal policies in compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and internal policies.

                  • Collaborate with data owners and stakeholders to define data definitions, business glossaries, and data classification.​

                    • Maintenance & Support:

                      • Develop and implement proactive maintenance strategies, including upgrades, patching, and performance tuning.

                      • Oversee incident response and troubleshooting for datarelated issues, ensuring minimal downtime and business disruption.

                      • Establish monitoring and alerting systems to proactively identify and address potential issues.​

                        • Strategy & Collaboration:

                          • Contribute to the overall data strategy, ensuring that data capabilities align with business objectives.

                          • Collaborate crossfunctionally with data architects, data scientists, analytics teams, and other engineering teams to support data initiatives.

                          • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements, recommending and implementing new features and best practices.

                            • What you bring to the table:

                              • Bachelors degree (Master’s preferred) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.

                              • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or a related field, with at least 3 years in a management or leadership role overseeing technical teams.

                              • Demonstrable experience with infrastructureascode tools (e.g., Terraform) for managing cloud resources.

                              • Strong understanding of data governance principles, data security best practices, and regulatory compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).

                              • Experience with CICD pipelines.

                              • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

                              • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure management (AWS preferred), including networking, security groups, and IAM roles.

                              • Proficiency in SQL and Python, experience with Scala a plus.

                              • Strong preference for candidates with Databricks platform administration experience, including Databricks Workspaces, Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and Spark.
