Compensation: $97,000 $116,000

For Our Future recognizes a staff bargaining unit, affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 494, a labor union. This position is NOT included in the For Our Future staff union.

Job Summary
The National Communications Director leads For Our Futures (FOF) earned media and communication efforts, developing and executing strategies for generating positive press coverage, managing our state email programs and external communications, and working with state staff on how to implement best practices to continue growing their programs effectively. The focus of our work, both online and offline, is focused on working families issues including but not limited to economic fairness, education, and racial justice. This role involves advising regional staff and state leadership, providing handson assistance with communications tools and activities, and building and cultivating strategic partnerships with partners and allies.


Essential Functions
  • Advises earned media events and other activities to local, state, and national press outlets
  • Creates and maintains databases of press outlets and contact information in each state
  • Manages database of press clips for state and national press coverage
  • Regularly updates and maintains FOF national and state websites
  • Reviews and approves externalfacing communications items from states
  • Manages state email campaigns and engagement of email lists
  • Advises states on best practices for earned media efforts and press events
  • Trains state staff on earned media tactics and activities
  • Creates tool boxes and training materials for a variety of earned media tactics for state use
  • Drafts OpEd and LTE language on a regular basis for state use
  • Creates and maintains toolkits of approved content for state use
  • Creates talking points and communications guidance for state staff on a weekly or daily basis
  • Reviews and approves partner press releases or signon letters for states
  • Works with National Organizing team to produce monthly recaps of state program activities
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as designated by the National Director of Organizing and Political Engagement
  • Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice

  • Skills And Qualifications
  • At least 3 cycles of competitive campaign or advocacy experience
  • At least 2 years of experience managing communications for an organization or campaign
  • Experience implementing a statewide or national program tailored to an assigned region or scope
  • Experience advising and executing strong press events in a variety of media markets and formats
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage, coach and train staff proficiently
  • Strong knowledge of digital communication platforms, such as Slack or Discord
  • Experience managing social media accounts and maximizing reach of content, preferred
  • Ability to make outreach to and build partnerships with other progressive organizations
  • Experience in managing programs that develop the capacity to meet metricsbased goals on datadriven campaigns
  • Strong knowledge of email marketing best practices and tools
  • Experience with managing website content and working with standard CMS’s such as WordPress preferred.
  • Basic computer literacy and access to a reliable laptop
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours in a highproductivity, metricsdriven work environment.

  • Physical Requirements
  • This position is based in HQ as a remote position and will require occasional travel throughout the various FOF offices in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin including inperson interactions with employees and community partners.
  • Prolonged periods of remaining in a stationary position at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to transport up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to travel to our offices in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and other locations as assigned.

  • Expected Hours of Work
  • Normal hours of business are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday, however, employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours including weekends, holidays, and nights.
  • Employees are required to abide by certain blackout dates during a campaign cycle or other key deadlines, and generally not allowed to take off during blackout periods. Emergencies are not affected by this policy.
