Anticipated Start Date: 10272025

The US base salary range for this fulltime position is provided below:

Junior: $93,750 $189,750

Mid: $165,000 $345,000

The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role. Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to jobrelated skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay and bonus eligibility, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Multiple Roles Available from Junior to Mid

We’re building a modern internal platform that brings together virtual machines, containers, storage, data services, networking, observability, and developer experience, all managed as software. This platform spans multiple environments including data centers, edge systems, and cloud regions.

Everything we do is built with open source, permissively licensed tools. We believe in versioning, automation, traceability, and developer empathy at the core.

We’re hiring infrastructure and platform software engineers to help build, operate, and evolve this platform. You’ll join a focused team working on highimpact systems that enable developers to build and deploy safely, quickly, and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• This is a fullstack infrastructure engineering role, focused on building and operating platform services such as messaging systems, API gateways, data platforms, and serverless runtimes
• Develop APIs, automation, and developerfacing tooling to improve platform usability and integration
• Build and maintain observability, monitoring, and alerting systems for platform services
• Collaborate with internal application teams to ensure platform reliability, performance, and ease of use
• Help design and run systems that scale across data centers, edge devices, and cloud environments

• Basic Qualifications

  • Experience with developing and operating PaaS technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, API gateways, SQLNoSQLGraph databases, caching systems, and serverless platforms
  • Proficiency in Go and Python
  • Experience with containerbased development and Kubernetes operator pattern
  • Experience with CICD pipelines, Git workflows, and DevOps practices
  • Interest in opensource platform and infrastructure technologies
  • Familiarity with observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
  • Experience with secure coding practices and platform security principles
  • Familiarity with secrets management and identity and access control
  • Ability to work in crossfunctional teams and communicate with stakeholders
  • Experience participating in design reviews, incident retrospectives, or RFC processes
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical concepts and to adapt to new technologies quickly
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Junior Level:

    • Up to 5 years of experience andor strong relevant open sourcepersonal projects
    • Curiosity and drive to learn deeply about platform engineering and distributed systems

    • Mid Level:

      • 5 to 10 years of experience in platform or infrastructure engineering roles.
      • Proven ability to independently deliver features and improvements.
      • Demonstrated experience collaborating across teams and mentoring junior engineers.
      • Familiarity with designing scalable systems and contributing to architectural decisions.

      • Preferred Qualifications

        • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent experience
        • Engineering experience with a public PaaS or cloud provider (AWS Lambda, GCP Cloud Functions, Azure Functions, etc.)
        • Experience developing and operating PaaS systems in Production such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, Neo4j, or API gateways
        • Experience with serverless runtimes and eventdriven architectures
        • Familiarity with developer tooling as a builder andor user
        • Interest in sustainable infrastructure and costresource awareness
        • Experience with singlepaneofglass management platforms or control planes for distributed systems
        • Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot
