Work Location: This position will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, pursuant to the College’s Work Location Policy, with one day per week remote and four days per week on-site.

About Haverford College Grounds

Haverford College Grounds comprises 216 acres of which 18 acres are athletic fields, one being Fieldturf. The Grounds Division provides a planned program of grounds care for campus lawns and athletic fields, leaf pickup, and snow/ice removal. Grounds is also responsible for minor landscape repairs. Grounds works in tandem with the Arboretum to keep the campus grounds safe, attractive, and clean.

About the Position
The Grounds Manager oversees the day-to-day care and maintenance of all college grounds and athletic facilities, snow/ice removal, and leaf pick-up. Occasional overtime is necessary. This position is considered essential personnel.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supervise the day-to-day functions of Grounds Crew and Equipment Mechanic (62%)
  • Oversee preparation of Athletic Department facilities for event, e.g., turf fields, track, tennis courts, and synthetic turf (20%)
  • Supervise the maintenance of all college vehicles, motorized equipment, and grounds equipment (5%)
  • Coordinate and interact with counterparts at other colleges and attend meetings relating thereto (3%)
  • Prepare Scopes of Work for outside contractors for grounds related work (5%)
  • Oversee the setup and breakdown for special events, e.g., Commencement (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned

Line of Report: The Grounds Manager reports to the Assistant Director of Facilities Management: Arboretum, Sustainability and Grounds, and directly supervisors five Groundskeepers and one Equipment Mechanic.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture or related field
  • Six years of ground management experience, with two years in a supervisory capacity

Professional Competencies

  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Ability to perform all physical tasks of grounds care including extensive walking and short periods lifting up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Athletic field maintenance

Special Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain PA Act 12 background checks
  • Possession of a valid U.S. Drivers’ License and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check
  • A valid Pennsylvania State Pesticide Applicator’s License or the ability to acquire one within six months of hire
  • This position is considered essential personnel, and the employee will be required to be on campus to provide services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the College; ensure continuity of key operations; and maintain and protect College’s properties.
