The Industrial Designer II position is part of the product development team and will lead key categories and collaborate with various stakeholders within the department, sales, business development, and our R&D team overseas to develop manufacturable consumer goods for our NPD/ODM sectors. This is through methods such as ideation, visualization, CADD/CAID modeling, concept render, graphic treatment, preparation of design for manufacturing sheet, and prototype analysis/revision. The designer must complete work independently with minimal supervision and is expected to support other members in reviewing final manufacturing sheets.

  • Responsible for the following development methods: design research, ideation (brainstorming), concept/development design and refinement, Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)/Computer-Aided Industrial Design (CAID), layout/presentation render proposals, graphic treatments/applications, prepare design for manufacturing sheets (design sheets) which includes layout, detail callouts/drawings, and graphic treatment details/assets assembly; prototype sample analysis and revisions
  • Create a design framework that considers cost, safety, ergonomics, size limits, manufacturing/printing limitations, feasibility, viability, and market desirability for the following inflatable categories: Watersports, furniture, toys, etc., also includes injection molded and metal frame products 
  • Utilize development methods in two main company sectors: New Product Development (NPD), which focuses on developing new catalog products; Original Design Manufacturing (ODM), which focuses on client-based modification request
  • Collaborate with the product development team, such as product managers & associates, product design manager, industrial designers and graphic designers. Additionally, collaborate with other departments such as sales, business development (Original Design Manufacturing) and creative service team (branding, packaging, and catalogs) 
  • Sustain updated knowledge in relevant software and design related tools
  • Participate in multidisciplinary environment/focus groups or surveys
  • Maintain an organized file system 
  • Provide and receive constructive feedback to and from all team members 
  • Follow directions and execute manufacturable based solutions, with detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrate eagerness to learn through curiosity, trial & error, teaching others, and sharing the latest trends, methods, and applications relevant to the field of industrial design or analogous fields
  • Lead key and strategic categories from sketch to production  
  • Elevate assigned categories by staying up to date with market competition and trends
  • Execute a proactive workflow to provide baseline projects ahead of the primary development season
  • Cultivate a close partnership with Product Managers to stay current in your assigned categories' internal strategies, market maps, and matrices 
  • Teach other design members the nuances of your categories to diversify the team’s knowledge and create a designer backup system  
  • Collect and manage a stream of ideas for the assigned categories  
  • Help maintain and update the internal R&D design manual 
  • Update the internal project tracker weekly with the most current information  
Requirements

Competencies

  • Ability to use relevant CADD/CAID software, i.e., Fusion 360. Also, acceptable experience in any industry standard design programs, e.g., SolidWorks, PTC Creo, AutoCAD, etc. 
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes/application, e.g., high frequency welding or mold injection, and general understanding of graphic treatments and printing process; experience in inflatables or relevant products, e.g., watersports, outdoor toys, furniture, or pools is a plus
  • Skilled in analog/digital communications such as sketching and prototyping 
  • Ability to adhere to timelines, collaborate with all stakeholders respectively, and communicate effectively by presenting ideas in a visually interesting way that would gain the support of the product development team and other departments
  • Ability to complete designs for manufacturing sheets with minimal supervision 
  • Comfortable proposing and executing projects Independently In assigned categories
  • Ability to utilize emotional intelligence to help collaborate effectively with a team and design products for various demographics 

  

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial design or similar field from a NASAD-accredited or internationally recognized institution with 4-8 years of experience
  • Alternatively, associate degree in Industrial Design or similar field with 6-10 years of professional experience
  • Portfolio demonstrates ability to own project deliverables, generate refined concepts, collaborate cross-functionally, and execute high-quality design solutions
  • Proficient with CAD software. CAD certificates are a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365: Teams, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, OneDrive/SharePoint using Mac OS or Windows
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite software/render programs, i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop and Keyshot. 
  • Experience in InDesign, lightroom, and other relevant render programs such as Rhino, Alias, etc. is a plus
  • Experience with designing toys or related types of consumer products, with designing injection molded products a plus

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time hybrid position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Required in-office Monday’s and Wednesday’s. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.


Travel: <20% travel, including international
