Senior Backend Engineer (Microservices & Cloud Automation)

xScion Solutions is looking for a highly experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join our dynamic team, focusing on developing robust microservices and automation for a critical financial services client. You will be responsible for designing, building, and deploying the core backend services and APIs that power a new self-service portal for enterprise file transfers, as well as enhancing existing automation pipelines. This role demands deep expertise in cloud-native architecture, API development, security, and CI/CD.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, You Will:

• Microservices & API Development:
  • Design, develop, and deploy scalable backend microservices primarily using Python-based AWS Lambdas.
  • Implement and manage RESTful APIs via AWS API Gateway, adhering to OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.
  • Configure and ensure secure credential management for all backend services and file transfer endpoints.
  • Implement robust data validation, error handling, logging, and retry mechanisms for all backend processes.
• Automation & CI/CD Pipeline Management:
  • Build and maintain new CI/CD pipelines to facilitate end-to-end deployment for customer workflows and the self-service portal.
  • Update and optimize existing GitLab pipelines that deploy AWS File Transform services (built with Python and Terraform) to accommodate new form automation requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate Change Management records are documented throughout request processes.
• Security & Compliance:
  • Design and implement secure authentication (e.g., OAuth 2.0, SAML) and authorization mechanisms for API consumers.
  • Ensure all backend solutions comply with stringent security and industry standards (FedRamp, NIST, MFA).
• Architecture & Design:
  • Contribute to the detailed architectural design document (ADD) outlining the proposed technology stack and microservices architecture.
  • Work with the team to create stub features for future Generative AI / Chatbot capabilities, managed via feature flags.
• Documentation & Knowledge Transfer:
  • Develop comprehensive documentation including API documentation (OpenAPI/Swagger), architectural design documents (ADDs), installation/configuration guides, operational runbooks, and code-level documentation for backend services, automation scripts, and Ansible playbooks.
  • Actively participate in "Train to Sustain" knowledge transfer sessions with client resources.
• Agile Team Participation:
  • Collaborate effectively within an Agile team, participating in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives using Jira, GitLab, and Confluence.

To Be Successful, You Need:

• US Citizenship and willingness to complete a background check
• Backend Development:
  • Python (strong proficiency)
  • Experience with microservices architecture principles.
• Cloud Platform:
  • AWS (deep experience with Lambda, API Gateway)
  • Understanding of other relevant AWS services (e.g., S3, DynamoDB, IAM).
• APIs:
  • Designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
  • API specification formats (OpenAPI/Swagger).
  • Authentication/Authorization protocols (OAuth 2.0, SAML).
• Infrastructure as Code:
  • Terraform (strong proficiency)
• CI/CD & DevOps:
  • GitLab CI/CD (or similar CI/CD platforms)
  • Experience building and managing deployment pipelines.
• Automation/Configuration Management:
  • Experience with Ansible (for agent automation context).
• Databases:
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Version Control:
  • Git (GitLab experience preferred).
• Methodologies:
  • Agile (Scrum/Kanban).
• General:
  • Robust understanding of data validation, error handling, and logging best practices.
  • Strong problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • US-based resource.

Desired Skills (Plus Points):

• Experience with Splunk Universal Forwarder or Dynatrace OneAgent (or similar enterprise agents).
• Experience in financial services or other highly regulated environments.
• Familiarity with feature flagging strategies.
• Knowledge of Python frameworks like Flask or FastAPI.
