Job Summary: 

Vail Resorts is the world’s leading mountain resort operator, with 42 resorts in 15 states and 4 countries. The Communications Team is responsible for promoting Vail Resorts and its values; each of our world-class resorts; and the product that provides guests with unrivaled access to all of them, the Epic Pass. Our resort-based communications teams are divided into three regions – West, Rocky Mountain and East – and manage strategic communications, PR, content creation and resort social media channels with the mission of providing an Experience of a Lifetime for our employees and guests.

 

Northstar is hiring a full-time, year-round Communications Manager, based at the resort in North Lake Tahoe.

 

The Communications Manager for Northstar is responsible for promoting and protecting the reputation of the resort through strategic communications, effective and creative storytelling, proactive media relations, social media management, issues management and crisis communications. The Manager acts as a spokesperson for the resort and provides guidance and counsel to resort leadership with internal and external communications initiatives. This role oversees the resorts’ social media accounts, content strategy and capture, and management of the resort Content Specialist.  

The ideal candidate will have experience in communications, media relations, storytelling, social media, copywriting and issues management. This position reports to the Sr. Manager of Communications for Tahoe and is also part of the broader West Region Communications team, responsible for building the reputation of the West Region, Vail Resorts, and the Epic Pass. 

 

Job Specifications:

  • Starting Wage: $70,000.00 - $78,000.00 + annual bonus

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead all strategic communications efforts and storytelling of Northstar through earned and owned media channels. 
  • Drive resort social media strategy and content development with oversight of resort Content Specialist. 
  • Serve as a key communications resource for the resorts’ leaders and develop strategic messaging that supports their goals internally and externally.   
  • Proactively build and manage media relationships and provide on-site media and interview support. 
  • Act as a spokesperson for Northstar and prep resort leaders to act as spokespeople. 
  • In addition to Northstar, this role supports media relations, communications strategy and social media storytelling for the broader Tahoe region of resorts.  
  • Work closely with Tahoe communications team and broader West Region team to ensure execution of regional communications and business strategies.   
  • Work closely with the local Field Marketing Manager for messaging alignment on resort website and to promote events and brand activations. 
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders across the resorts.   
  • Manage media lists, media tracking, and reporting.  

 

 Job Requriments:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications or Marketing  
  • 5+ years of experience in an external communications or PR role, and proven experience working with journalists  
  • Excellent writer able to draft nuanced communications on a variety of topics 
  • Experience with all forms of external communications channels, especially news media 
  • Experience with and knowledge of social media channels, community management, and content capture 
  • Experience with crisis communications and issues management 
  • Passionate and proactive with drive to grow and develop as a leader  
  • Self-starter who can manage independent projects      
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills; builds and maintains highly effective working relationships internally and externally   
  • Team player – strives for collective success 

 

The expected Total Compensation for this role is $70,000.00 - $78,000.00 + annual bonus. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
