Job description

Fullstack Senior Software Engineer

At StartPlaying, we're on a mission to create communities through play. We believe that being a Game Master (GM) isn't just a hobby; it's the best gig economy job in the world. Whether you're running epic campaigns or intimate storytelling sessions, we empower GMs to turn their passion into a thriving business.

We're building the platform we always wished existed. As passionate gamers and creators ourselves, we understand the profound impact of meaningful play. One of our co-founders was the world's first professional GM, and that pioneering spirit runs through everything we do.

Why Now?

Since launching, we've helped Game Masters earn over 40 million dollars doing what they love, and we're just getting started. We're building powerful tools to help GMs engage with players, grow communities, and make a living on their own terms. We're seeking a Full Stack Engineer to help us scale and further develop the platform for both GMs and players.

About the Role

As a Full Stack Engineer at StartPlaying, you'll work on product experiences that directly impact players and GMs alike. You'll help shape our platform's technical architecture, build new features, and refine systems that meet the needs of our small but growing company.

What You'll Do
  • Architect & Build: Lead the design and development of scalable, maintainable systems across our stack.

  • Deliver Impact: Own projects from design and code to shipping and learning from real user behavior.

  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with product designers and customer support to build delightful, high-performing user experiences.

  • Elevate the Craft: Advocate best practices in system design, code quality, observability, and testing.

  • Document & Share: Set the standard for well-documented code and architectural clarity that helps your teammates move faster and learn better.

About You
  • You have 7+ years of experience building and shipping high-quality software products.

  • You're fluent in full-stack web development (Node, TypeScript, React, Next.js, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, AWS), and excited to learn what you don't know.

    • Bonus points if you've worked with Prisma, BigQuery, or Vercel, and/or have experience building marketplaces, payment infrastructure, or scheduling software.

  • You've led meaningful technical decisions and are comfortable driving architecture discussions (we want to hear your strong opinions about API design).

  • You sweat the details when it comes to UI and UX by delivering pixel-perfect solutions driven by user empathy.

  • You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical teammates to stay productive, clarify complex problems, and create easy-to-understand technical documentation.

  • You take ownership, work independently, drive toward clarity, and stay grounded in user needs.

  • You're self-aware, self-editing, and kind. You hold yourself to high standards without ego and collaborate with curiosity.

What It's Like to Work Here

We're a small, fully remote team of nerds, builders, and play enthusiasts. We optimize for thoughtful output and real impact.

You'll be part of a culture where:

  • We don't take ourselves too seriously and believe that happy employees do their best work.

  • We tackle challenging problems when necessary and celebrate innovative ideas to avoid them entirely.

  • We cultivate an environment that encourages and enables people to learn, take on new challenges, and consistently own more impactful projects.

  • We make data-driven decisions based on analytics and user needs.
