About Us
National Mortgage News is a leading trade publication serving professionals in the residential mortgage industry. We deliver in-depth reporting on the market forces, regulations, and innovations shaping the housing finance landscape. 

The Role
We are seeking a skilled reporter to join our editorial team on a full-time freelance basis to cover for a staff member on temporary leave. This contract position will run for eight months, with the possibility of long-term employment thereafter. 

The successful candidate has experience writing about mortgages. This person knows what Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are and understands their roles in the mortgage industry. This person can explain how the bond yield relates to mortgage interest rates. They have contacts at the major nonbank lenders in the field, have experience covering earnings reports and can hit the ground running with story ideas and scoops starting on day one of the gig. This person writes clean, sharp, engaging copy that adheres to AP style.  

Responsibilities

  • Report and write daily news stories (400–800 words) in AP style
  • Cover key topics in the residential mortgage space, including capital markets, federal regulations, originations, and servicing
  • Deliver timely, accurate reporting under deadline pressure
  • Monitor industry trends and identify emerging stories
  • Be available and responsive to fellow team members between 9 am and 5 pm EST, Monday through Thursday 

Qualifications

  • Proven experience reporting on housing finance
  • Strong news judgment and writing skills
  • Familiarity with the regulatory environment and capital markets related to mortgages
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
  • Existing sources in the mortgage industry
     

Compensation

Monthly Salary Range: $5000-$6667 (15th & last day of the month) 

Compensation for freelance engagements is determined based on the scope of work, project needs, experience, and location. We encourage applicants to share their rate expectations when applying.
