KCPP Purpose
The purpose of the Kansas City Pet Project is to provide sheltering and animal services to the community of Kansas City, MO by placing pets into homes with new families, enhancing public safety through animal control services, being a resource to people and pets in our community, reuniting lost pets with their owners, establishing pet retention programs, providing humane education opportunities, and enriching the lives of pets and people in Kansas City to build up and support a more safe and humane Kansas City. Schedule: One weekend day required, 18-26 hours/week
KC Pet Project is hiring a part-time Barista at our main shelter location, the Kansas City Campus for Animal Care (KCCAC). We are seeking a reliable, self-motivated barista to support daily operations at our coffee shop. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys coffee culture, learning new skills, engaging with the public, and working in a miss-driven, fast paced environment. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering excellent customer service, preparing drinks, maintaining a clean and welcoming space, and keeping the shop fully stocked. Depending on your schedule, you will either open or close the café independently.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Greet fellow staff members, volunteers, community members, customers (and their pets!) promptly and kindly.
Take orders and process payments efficiently and with accuracy.
Prepare and serve coffee, espresso drinks, and other beverages to standard.
Open or close the shop according to established procedures.
Keep the workspace, guest area, and equipment clean and organized throughout the shift.
Restock inventory including cups, syrups, milks, bakery and lunch items, as needed.
Monitor and document low inventory levels and communicate restocking needs.
Follow all food safety, hygiene, and cleanliness standards.
Confidently upsell products and suggest add-ons to help meet or exceed monthly sales goals.
Handle occasional troubleshooting (equipment or customer concerns) calmly and with confidence.
Represent the mission and values of the shelter through every interaction.
Working Conditions:
Most functions will be performed at the Kansas City Campus for Animal Care. Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Must be able to lift up to 30 lb., sustain long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching and animal handling and restraint for various activity levels of animals in an animal shelter-type setting. Must be able to effectively manage and navigate the emotional aspects of animal welfare
Qualifications
Prior barista or café experience is preferred.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Comfortable working alone and managing time and tasks independently.
Strong attention to detail and cleanliness.
Ability to stand for long periods and lift to 30 lbs.
Must be available to work morning or evening shifts and holidays based on the assigned schedule.
