Job description

Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF) is seeking an experienced and mission-aligned Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead a revitalization of its development operations. This pivotal executive will architect and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, ensure a high-functioning development team, and position MBF for long-term philanthropic success. The CDO will be both a visionary and a builder — someone who thrives in a hands-on, entrepreneurial environment and leads with both strategy and empathy.

The Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF) exists to share the love of Christ by strengthening faith-based medical ministries worldwide. With a legacy rooted in compassion and a vision focused on sustainability, MBF partners with Christian hospitals, clinics, and nursing schools—primarily in underserved areas of sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti—to bring physical healing and spiritual hope to those who need it most.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement a comprehensive, multi-channel fundraising strategy, including major and principal gifts, planned giving, and donor acquisition.
  • Build, lead, manage, and mentor a development team, including front-line fundraisers and support staff.
  • Utilize and enhance systems and infrastructure to support donor engagement, move management, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Strengthen donor trust and broaden the donor base beyond the current ~1,500 active donors.
  • Partner with the CEO, board, and senior leadership to align fundraising strategy with MBF’s mission and long-term goals.
  • Represent MBF with donors, foundations, and strategic partners to expand visibility and support.
  • Create a performance culture with clear metrics, transparency, and accountability.
  • Manage and grow a personal portfolio of 25+ major donor relationships.
Professional Acumen
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive fundraising experience, including major and principal gift strategy and solicitation.
  • Demonstrated success in comprehensive fundraising approaches: direct mail, donor acquisition, wealth overlay, planned giving, and campaigns.
  • Comfort working in lean, entrepreneurial environments and building systems from the ground up.
  • Proficiency in development analytics, donor segmentation, and CRM tools (Salesforce); CFRE certification is a plus.
Leadership and Management
  • Proven ability to build and unify development teams while mentoring individuals toward high performance.
  • Skilled in managing through change, and the implementation of new systems and structures.
  • Valuable contributor to a senior leadership team.
Cultural and Missional Alignment
  • A vibrant and growing Christian faith with a deep commitment to MBF’s mission of serving as a witness to Christ through global healthcare. (See MBF’s statement of faith.)
  • Cultural humility and sensitivity, particularly in international and cross-cultural contexts.
  • A pastoral, joyful, and emotionally intelligent presence that contributes to a respectful and prayerful work environment.
  • Embraces diversity and helps shape an inclusive culture that values reflection, celebration, and mutual respect.
Work Environment and Location
  • This position is fully remote, with flexibility for domestic and international travel.
  • The CDO will report to the CEO and serve as a member of MBF’s senior leadership team.
  • Collaboration with operational, program, and finance teams is essential to success.
Compensation is projected to be $150,000-$160,000 plus an annual incentive bonus.
