Engineering Director, Electro-Optic Devices, R&D, Defence
Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

This role will lead the complex engineering heart of this scaling Deep Tech business both operationally and strategically across all engineering disciplines - Electro Optical, Mechatronic, Systems, Firmware, Materials, Hardware, Mechanical.

The Role

  • Senior Engineering Leadership role with clear route to C-Suite
  • Lead core systems and engineering frameworks
  • Lead Technical Cross Functional teams
  • People Leadership - Training & Development, Engineering Discipline
  • Product Design and Implementation
  • Thought Leadership, Strategic Vision, Project Management, Product Management
  • Guide the technology roadmap, drive engineering excellence
  • Pioneer emerging technologies while delivering mission-critical solutions.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and high performance.
  • Oversee engineering design principles, documentation, and process optimisation to ensure efficiency and scalability.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions, aligning engineering initiatives with business objectives.
  • Manage the engineering P&L - budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation

About You

  • Degree in Electronics, Aerospace, Software, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Deep technical expertise in AI, optics or autonomous platforms
  • You will have delivered a product and dealt with consequences of decisions
  • 15+ years experience in engineering and leadership
  • Previously led technical engineering and cross functional teams
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical leadership with strategic business contributions
  • Experience managing engineering budgets, with a solid understanding of P&L
  • Lead and support a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.
