Michigan Millers Mutual Insurance Company is seeking a Production Underwriter to join our Commercial Lines Underwriting Team! 


The individual in this role will have the responsibility of writing new commercial lines accounts to enhance profitability. This individual will also have the opportunity to build and maintain strong agency relationships. 


What are the responsibilities and opportunities of this role? 

  • Develops a commercial lines book of business with assigned VIP agencies. 
  • Utilizes understanding of risk assessments and exposures to identify business opportunities to maximize assigned territory loss ratio and growth objectives. 
  • Meets business goals through new business development and overall profitability of assigned territory by underwriting large, challenging, and complex commercial business policies.  
  • Travels to assigned agencies on a regular basis to build on agency partnerships and promote / negotiate higher agency ranking position. 
  • Actively seeks opportunities to promote Michigan Miller’s / Western National Insurance Group products and services. 
  • Understands how to apply rating methodology and less frequently used coverages. 
  • Networks within insurance community to stay abreast of marketplace changes and emerging industry issues.  
  • Serves as a mentor by providing technical support, training, and problem solving for other underwriters on an ongoing basis. 
  • Manages large account relationships and renewals for both Michigan and New York that exceed $250,000 and refers to senior management when necessary. 
  • Applies knowledge to help solve problems of varied scope and complexity. 
  • Determines solutions by analyzing partial and / or conflicting data. 
  • Consistently acts according to our customer experience standards, including responding quickly, maintaining a positive attitude, building rapport, demonstrating empathy, managing the customer’s expectations, using the proper communication channel for the situation, and taking ownership to ensure the customer’s issue is resolved.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.  


Requirements

What are the must-have qualifications for a candidate? 

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of industry best practices, standards, multiple discipline underwriting concepts, and broad business segments. 
  • Ability to multitask and solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with agents and other departments.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills. 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to visit assigned agencies on a regular basis.

What will our ideal candidate have?

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance or finance.
  • Demonstrated mentorship or coaching skills.
  • Insurance-related certification is preferred but not required (e.g., CPCU, AU, or CIC).
  • Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment, and software packages.


Compensation overview

The targeted hiring range for this role is $104,500 - $149,435, annually. However, the base pay offered may vary depending on the job-related knowledge, skills, credentials, and experience of each candidate as well as other factors such as the scope and location of the role. Candidates looking for compensation outside of the posted range are encouraged to apply and will be considered based on their individual qualifications and / or may be considered for other positions.
