Scope of Role

World Centric is seeking an experienced and strategic Government Affairs and Advocacy Manager to lead

advocacy efforts at the intersection of foodservice packaging, sustainability, and waste policy. This role

will focus on legislation and regulations, including local, state, and federal policies affecting compostable

and sustainable packaging.


The ideal candidate brings a strong policy background, public presence, and collaborative mindset. They

will represent World Centric in industry coalitions, regulatory working groups, ordinance committees,

and stakeholder initiatives—shaping the future of waste and packaging legislation while positioning the

company and are expected to be comfortable with being outspoken about sustainable legislation.


Team Leadership Responsibilities

While this role does not have direct reports, the Manager will:

  • Work closely with the Manager of Circularity & Customer Engagement (CCE) to lead
  • cross-functional projects with internal teams;
  • Represent World Centric in external coalitions and industry working groups
  • Coordinate advocacy and stakeholder engagement strategies with senior leadership like the
  • CEO and CRO

Responsibilities


Policy Strategy, Monitoring & Advocacy

  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies to influence environmental and social policy on
  • compostable packaging, the circular economy, and sustainability across all government levels.
  • Monitor legislative developments to policy changes in compostable packaging, labeling, and other
  • environmental and social issues
  • Identify and report on trends, enforcement risks, foam bans, and plastic waste policies both verbal
  • and written that may enhance sales opportunities
  • Maintain an internal policy tracker with summaries and alerts for World Centric
  • Represent World Centric in coalitions, policy hearings, state legislators and agencies (CalRecycle,
  • Washington Department of Ecology etc...) and federal congressional legislators, Senators and
  • agencies (USDA, EPA etc.) and ordinance development efforts
  • Collaborate with government agencies (e.g., USDA, CalRecycle), trade organizations (e.g., USCC,
  • SPC), producer responsibility organizations (PROs), and industry stakeholders to promote
  • environmental policy, regulatory alignment, and circular economy initiatives that support and
  • advance compostable foodservice packaging.

Engagement, Relations

  • Engage with policymakers, regulators, and industry groups to advance composting, waste reduction,
  • and environmental justice initiatives
  • Build/maintain relationships with advocacy groups, environmental organizations & industry partners
  • Serve as company liaison to local ordinance leads and regulatory bodies nationwide
  • Represent the company in industry coalitions and task forces (e.g., USCC, CMA, SPC)
  • Collaborate with marketing, sales, and product teams to align advocacy with business objectives
  • Public Representation & Thought Leadership
  • Represent World Centric at conferences, public forums, and sustainability events
  • Develop content, presentations, and public commentary that reinforce our leadership in
  • compostability with a willingness to go against industry norms and be disruptive to advance the
  • initiatives


Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Environmental Science, or related field
  • (Master’s preferred), with at least 5 years’ experience in public policy, government affairs,
  • regulatory compliance, or related roles
  • Experience with waste management, ideally composting and recycling AND/OR experience
  • within the foodservice and packaging industries from manufacturing to distribution to end-use
  • Deep understanding of EPR policy and other relevant laws, standards, and certifications (e.g.,
  • SB54, AB 1201, SB 1383, ASTM D6400/D6868/D8410, CMA/BPI/NSF/How2Recycle, PFAS bans)
  • Strong skills in policy analysis, coalition management, and legislative research
  • Passion for World Centric’s mission and values

  • Exceptional communication and public speaking
  • Exceptional writing skills. Ability to respond quickly and succinctly internally to distill complex
  • issues into written responses
  • Ability to translate technical language into customer relevant insights
  • Self-motivated, organized, and collaborative team player
  • Capacity to manage multiple deadlines and shifting priorities under pressure

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience representing an organization publicly in industry associations, regulatory committees, or
  • public-private working groups
  • Pre-existing relationships with industry-relevant groups and associations, e.g. composters,
  • CalRecycle, USDA (National Organics Program), certification bodies, etc.
  • Work Environment & Requirements
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods
  • Comfortable speaking at public events or in front of large audiences
  • Comfort working directly with CRO and CEO on policy initiatives and legislative stances.
  • Comfort going against industry norms. Passionate about being disruptive to impart change.
  • Remote role with occasional travel to Sonoma County HQ, Atlanta Product Development Center and
  • nationwide. Travel requirement: 10–25%
