Description

PURPOSE STATEMENT


The RN Patient Safety Coordinator is responsible for leading and supporting initiatives that promote a culture of safety and reduce risk to patients, staff, and the organization. This role facilitates safety event investigations, root cause analyses (RCAs), and supports clinical teams in implementing best practices in patient safety. The coordinator works collaboratively with leadership, frontline staff, providers, and regulatory teams to ensure compliance with safety standards and drive continuous improvement.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate and support the hospital’s patient safety and risk reduction initiatives.
  • Investigate and analyze patient safety events, near misses, and adverse events; facilitate root cause analyses and failure mode effect analysis (FMEA).
  • Collaborate with frontline staff and leadership to develop, implement, and monitor corrective action plans.
  • Facilitate reporting and trending of safety events using the organization’s event reporting system.
  • Participate in daily safety huddles and serve as a clinical resource for patient safety.
  • Promote a Just Culture and speak up culture within the organization.
  • Monitor compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, and other regulatory/accreditation requirements related to patient safety.
  • Educate staff on patient safety principles, event reporting, and high-reliability practices.
  • Lead or support hospital-wide safety initiatives (e.g., falls, medication safety, infection prevention, handoff communication).
  • Serve as a liaison between departments to ensure follow-up and resolution of safety concerns.
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and procedures related to patient safety.
  • Maintain confidentiality of safety events and follow best practices in disclosure.
Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Currently licensed to practice as a professional Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Missouri.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • 3 years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience in quality improvement, data management, or program coordination preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Current BLS required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and general office skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office or related software.
  • Ability to articulate complex issues clearly and professionally in both verbal and written formats.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
  • Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
