Job description

Overview: 

If you're looking for the stability of a profitable, growing company with the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup, we’re hiring. SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a Senior Underwriter, Product Technical Specialist. 

What you’d be doing: 

  • Work within Specialty Property, a cross-functional team of actuaries, catastrophe risk modelers, risk analysts, product analysts, data scientists, database and software developers in developing new products and determining rate and rule changes. 
  • Subject Matter Expert on Specialty Property products demonstrating technical underwriting skills and keeping abreast of products, guidelines, trends, and state regulatory changes. 
  • Ensure adherence to carrier underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures to minimize risk exposure.  
  • Act as an authoritative source for day-to-day underwriting activities and ensuring timely underwriting actions using internal and external sources including: 
    • Underwriting referrals 
    • Ensuring insurance to value 
    • Ordering, reviewing and managing inspections 
    • Reviewing and summarizing content of claim files for claim coverage, recissions, prior claim & litigation disputes, and adverse risk conditions  
    • Providing guidance to operational departments in resolving complex rule, form, and procedural questions 
  • Collaborate with other Senior Underwriters and Underwriters on projects, workflows, procedures, and workload management. 
  • Work with Compliance on responses to DOI complaints, interpretation of statutory requirements, data calls, and implementation of state emergency orders and other regulatory changes. 
  • Interact with Wholesalers, Retail Agents, Territory Sales Managers, Customer Care Representatives to maintain a high level of service with a focus on underwriting acumen, data quality and accuracy, and ease of doing business.  
  • Communicate with wholesalers, retail agents, and individual insureds as necessary to assure high quality of data including underwriting exception risks, analyzing and interpreting coverage, explaining underwriting requirements and philosophies. Will communicate directly with policyholders to answer questions or present information. 
  • Work with the Departments of Insurance through Regulatory Compliance on regulatory filings and responses for admitted products.  
  • Collaborate with Software and Enterprise Solutions Teams to document detailed business requirements for underwriting related projects for new products, system changes and enhancements. 
  • Create, perform, and validate system testing plans and communicate results. 
  • Communicate underwriting and product related system changes in a timely manner to affected departments. 
  • Identify trends from daily underwriting activities as well as inefficiencies in workflows and opportunities for improvement. 
  • Participate in special projects as required. 

We’re looking for someone who has: 

  • Minimum 10-15 years underwriting experience in personal lines. 
  • Solid analytical skills and demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze data. 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication, and can effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners. 
  • Thrives in dynamic, fast-moving environments, operates effectively with minimal supervision, and leverages technology to drive efficiency. 
  • Demonstrates adaptability and resourcefulness in dynamic settings, leveraging innovative tools and methods to streamline processes and optimize workflows.  
  • Experienced in independently managing responsibilities while maintaining a focus on achieving organizational objectives efficiently. 
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and the ability to excel both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. 
  • Expertise with Microsoft’s suite of products, including Teams, SharePoint, Loop and experience with other insurance software. 
  • Familiarity with tools for business process modeling (such as Visio), reporting (Tableau, PowerBI) is a plus. 

Highly preferred candidates also have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, CPCU, or related professional Insurance Institute designations  
  • Solid background in personal lines, including insurance data analysis, and underwriting  
  • Experience with both admitted and surplus lines insurance is highly desirable 
  • Experience working directly with customers and insurance producers and agents  
  • Experience working with insurance software, internet email and MS Office Suite
