Description

HeartShare is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Intern to support cross-departmental research projects that inform program development and strategic planning. This intern will collaborate with various departments to gather data, analyze trends, and develop reports that guide decision-making at our main office.

Objective:

Develop a scalable, replicable universal design template that ensures people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) can age in place safely, comfortably, and with dignity in their communities. This project centers accessibility not just as a technical requirement, but as a cornerstone of autonomy, inclusion, and long-term well-being.

Why It Matters:
People with I/DD face compounded barriers to aging in place — including inaccessible physical spaces, a lack of adaptive supports, and systems that default to institutional care. Establishing inclusive, thoughtfully designed environments is essential to supporting continuity, community belonging, and choice throughout the lifespan. Universal design offers a powerful approach to create spaces that adapt to evolving needs, promote independence, and prevent unnecessary transitions out of familiar communities.

Core Activities:

  • Landscape scan: Take stock of existing gaps and gather inputs to inform design, including:
    • Internal and external thought partners with deep expertise in I/DD and accessibility
    • Models and prototypes from peer organizations and inclusive housing projects
    • Relevant research on aging with I/DD and environmental supports
    • Regulatory and policy considerations affecting long-term housing
  • Design framework development: Define essential components of a universal design template tailored for aging in place, including:
    • Accessibility specifications (e.g., cognitive wayfinding aids, sensory-friendly materials, physical mobility supports)
    • Recommended products and materials that balance safety, durability, and sensory integration
    • Contractor and vendor standards to ensure consistent, inclusive execution
    • A curated list of preferred vendors with universal design expertise
    • A process guide for inclusive community engagement and co-design with residents

Intended Output:
A practical, flexible universal design prototype and implementation guide that can be adapted across housing sites. This tool will lay the groundwork for more inclusive housing that evolves with residents’ needs—allowing people with I/DD to live full, connected lives in the communities they call home.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Public Administration, Social Work, Public Health, Data Analytics, Human Resources, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and adaptable to a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit work and community-based services.
