Job description

Indigo Research offers a unique opportunity to mentor highly motivated high school students from around the world, helping them explore academic research and complete a college-level project. Our program provides high-quality research mentorship to aspiring students from diverse backgrounds, empowering them with valuable experience in academic research and making a meaningful impact on their academic and professional futures.

We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Mentor with expertise in optical communication and related areas, such as the physics of data transmission and alternative data transfer methods, to guide talented high school students in exploring this exciting field. As an Indigo Research Mentor, you will work remotely and connect with students via video calls. You’ll guide them through the research process, helping them develop technical skills and complete a small, independent research project, such as a simulation model, research paper, or prototype.

This mentorship role provides the opportunity to inspire the next generation of engineers while sharing your expertise in cutting-edge topics like fiber optics, data transmission via light, and the science of communication systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Mentor students in developing research projects related to electrical engineering, with a focus on optical communication and data transfer methods.
  • Guide students through the research and writing process, culminating in a publishable project (e.g., research paper, prototype, or simulation).
  • Foster a supportive, cross-cultural learning environment that builds students' confidence and skills.
Qualifications:
  • Faculty currently employed at a US top 15 or UK top 10 university in Electrical Engineering or related fields, with expertise in optical communication or similar areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to break down complex topics like how data/information is transmitted from a physics perspective into accessible lessons for students.
  • Empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity when working with high school students.
  • Comfort in a feedback-driven, flexible start-up environment.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to seek support when needed.

This role is ideal for an academic professional eager to inspire future engineers and make a lasting impact on their educational journey. If you’re passionate about mentoring and the exciting field of optical communication, we’d love to hear from you!
