Ultra Maritime has an exciting opportunity for a Software Architect to contribute to our rapidly expanding business. The candidate will be responsible for providing the technical direction for a suite of software products, bridging between business needs and technical implementation to drive the overall architecture direction for our software. The role would suit a candidate with visionary mindset, a passion for technology, strong communication skills and significant experience in software development, test and integration, and product ownership.

Job Description
Scope Summary:
The Software Architect is responsible for defining and maintaining the software architecture for our product line. This involves developing product roadmaps, driving technology insertion, and aligning with business development to ensuring alignment with stakeholders while incorporating cross-product, project, and customer needs. The architect guides the creation of software product requirements, addresses legacy systems and obsolescence, establishes software development best practices, ensures product and process compliance to relevant industry and military standards, and drives the software test and integration strategy. Furthermore, the architect contributes to bids and work packages to ensure alignment with product roadmaps and defines necessary infrastructure needs for development and testing environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Defining Software Architecture: Making architecture decisions for our line of software products, maintaining architecture documentation (drawings, written design descriptions, data flow diagrams, and UML/SysML models). Communicating decisions, collaborating with stakeholders, and diplomatically negotiating solutions to disagreements
- Lead the Product Direction: Developing a software roadmap, including identifying and encouraging opportunities for reuse. Staying current with technology trends and driving novel technology insertion. Aligning product direction with business development plans, including awareness of upcoming requirements or functionality from our target customers. Liaising with cross product teams like safety and supportability and incorporating their input into product direction.
- Addressing Legacy Systems and Obsolescence: Identify strategies to modernize, replace, or deprecate legacy systems. Ensure product development roadmaps plan for obsolescence. Management of technical risk, technical debt, and continued incorporation of lessons learnt from past projects.
- Software Development Best Practices and Standards: Define the software development, release, and lifecycle support processes. Maintain awareness of relevant standards (AQAP 2122, MIL-STDs, IEEE, DEF-STAN, etc.)
- Software Test and Integration Strategy: Actively drive development of the test and integration strategy for software development and associated process documentation. Identify opportunities to automate unit, functional, and regression testing. Incorporate into product development roadmaps the associated requirements for the test environment and approach (e.g., emulators / stimulators / simulators)
- Adjudicating Technical Decisions: Input to and review of detailed technical decisions, including code reviews. Providing general technical guidance and oversight to team.
- Software Product Requirements: Guiding development of software product requirements that capture cross-project considerations for our software products, such as cybersecurity. Review of software requirement specifications and supporting requirement verification efforts. Maintaining awareness of project-specific software requirements, and ensuring the product direction is aligned.
- Contributing to Bids and Work Packages: Ensuring the bids and work packages scoped on projects align with the process expectations and product roadmaps (e.g., are novel features/technologies identified in the roadmap funded, does the work package include scope for the process steps required)
- Infrastructure Needs: Defining infrastructure needs for the virtual development environment, automated test environment, and any other infrastructure services and tools required for the deployment pipeline.
Required Skills/Experience
- Degree level (or equivalent) in a related engineering discipline such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
- 2 or more years of experience in a software architect role for complex software solutions spanning multiple components and applications
- 2 or more years of experience serving in a technical leadership capacity.
- 7 or more years of C++ and/or Java experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Effective at adjudicating technical debates and decisions. Able to negotiate and encourage process changes.
- Self-motivated, adaptable to change, proactive, and diligent
- Knowledge of Software Engineering best practices, methodologies, processes, and tools, specifically the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
- Experience with Linux operating systems and comfortable working on the command line
Desired Skills
- Experience working on customized software solutions for government organizations (any level)
- Experience developing architecture models and documentation in accordance with industry standards (e.g., SysML, UML).
- Good understanding of software configuration and build management
- A good working understanding of Microsoft office applications: Word and Excel
- Experience using software development and continuous integration tools (CI/CD) such as, but not limited to: Jira, Azure Devops, Jenkins, static code analysis tools
Wish List Skills
- Sonar domain knowledge or similar signal processing intensive applications
- Experience working with hardware and software emulators to conduct integration testing
- Direct experience creating automated build pipelines in tools such as Jenkins or Azure Devops

- The Candidate must be capable of acquiring a Canadian / NATO Secret security clearance and a Canadian Controlled Goods assessment to the satisfaction of the company
