What you will be doing in the role of a Director, Donor Experience 

The Director, Donor Experience serves as a key member of the Major Gift and Planned Giving leadership team for Susan G. Komen. This position will be responsible for supporting the Vice President, Major Gifts & Planned Giving in managing the national mid/major program, meeting defined goals and metrics in our national stewardship program. The Director will be responsible for stewardship and cultivation of a comprehensive mid-level and major donor portfolio valued at $1M+ with a focus on growth and retention, in addition to overseeing the Donor Experience Officers (DXOs) and responsibility for approximately $5M in team revenue. Your priority will be providing a valued and authentic experience via telephone, email, and mail with the goal of providing donors with a meaningful relationship that enhances their connection to Komen. You will also train, coach, mentor, and manage the national Donor Experience Officer team with support from the VP and collaborate with development staff across the country as needed. This position will report to the Vice President, Major Gifts & Planned Giving. This is a fully remote position.

What you will bring to the table 

  • Train mid-level (DXO) team in the prescribed individual giving stewardship and cultivation plan and support the building and management of their portfolios of donors.
  • Implement ongoing stewardship and cultivation plans for mature portfolio of donors giving primarily through direct mail and digital channels across the team.
  • Utilize prescribed tools, tactics, and intensive accountability to fast-track donor engagement, resulting in increased giving YOY in all mid-level portfolios.
  • Cultivate and grow revenue in mature portfolio of approximately 1,800 mid- major donors and prospects ($1,000-$10,000+ giving range). The revenue goal is $1M+  
  • Based on a defined contact method and cadence, the Director will lead the DXO team to reach each donor in a portfolio a minimum once per quarter through intentional Moves Management and specific touch points.     
  • Ensure the team executes prompt and effective stewardship for every gift in a managed DXO portfolio. 
  • Qualify donors in the portfolio, support ongoing prospecting efforts for new major donors at a national level, and training to support team in qualification efforts.
  • Work in collaboration with VP on identifying and cultivating potential major gift prospects. 
  • Make introductions to the VP when appropriate high-level donors are discovered for possible placement in VP or CEO portfolio through prospecting and qualification efforts.
  • Ensure Salesforce is kept up to date on all moves and donor interactions. 
  • Ensure other technology and tools are utilized by the team to track KPIs.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Susan G. Komen mission and programs to promote national fundraising initiatives. 
  • Manage the National Stewardship Program for unassigned donors giving $250-$10,000, ensure DXO team meets all stewardship goals through team delegation. 
  • Support Major Gift and Planned Giving department in meeting annual revenue goals, and overall supporting Community Development revenue targets.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of successful work history in fundraising and relationship development. 
  • Must have experience managing, training, and leading a team to meet and exceed goals.
  • Must have fundraising experience with a proven record of revenue generation exceeding $1M+ in individual portfolio, in addition to team or department responsibility $3M+.
  • Excellent organization, time management and detail-orientation skills required to manage donor caseload and document relationship status and updates. 
  • Intrinsically motivated, able to work autonomously in a remote environment.
  • Ability to analyze and integrate information from relevant sources. 
  • Strong ability to listen compassionately and probe effectively to establish a good rapport with donors. 
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including relationship building and communication in-person, on video, over the phone, and via email with diverse groups of people with tact, patience, and courtesy. 
  • Outcome driven with ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities. 
  • Remains composed under stress, handles responses to criticism tactfully and delivers on organizational commitments. 
  • Possess in-depth knowledge about donor databases, preferably Salesforce. 
  • Strong technical skills and comfort utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel, and Microsoft Teams. Knowledge of Salesforce, Asana, Gravyty, FreeWill, and other platforms a plus, ability to train and coach others in these systems is a must.
  • Models and fosters behavior that is consistent with the beliefs, values, goals, and objectives of Susan G. Komen. 
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
